A daily game

The Daily Rough Guess

Five pairs a day from the 82 places we have rated: which one is rougher? Same five for everyone, new set at 00:00 UTC.

Today's puzzle

Five pairs. One question each: which one is rougher? Everyone gets the same five.

Five rounds, about a minute. Your streak stays on this device.

The four bands you are guessing between

  • 92 ยท Notorious
  • 75 ยท Rough
  • 50 ยท Manageable
  • 25 ยท Gentle

The Daily Rough Guess is a 5 round game: each round shows two of 82 rated places and asks which is rougher for motion sickness. The pairs are generated from the UTC date rather than at random, so every player worldwide gets the same five on the same day and the set changes at 00:00 UTC. Today is 2026-08-14 UTC. Ratings are inherited from each place's own guide on four bands: gentle 25, manageable 50, rough 75, notorious 92.

Key facts

  • The game draws from 82 rated places: 24 sea crossings, 12 theme park rides and 46 road trips.
  • Each daily puzzle is 5 rounds, and the same 5 pairs are served to every player on that UTC day.
  • The puzzle changes at 00:00 UTC, which is a single moment worldwide rather than local midnight.
  • A pair is only used when the two places sit in different risk bands, so no round is a coin flip.
  • Theme parks are excluded because their guides publish a written profile rather than a rating, and an unrated place cannot be ranked against a rated one.

How the game works

Each round puts two places side by side. Pick the one you think is rougher and both ratings turn over, along with the line each place's guide uses to describe it. After 5 rounds you get a score out of 5 and a grid you can paste anywhere.

The pairs are not random. They come out of the UTC date through a fixed generator, which is what lets two people compare a score without either of them having an easier set. It also means the puzzle is the same whether you open it in Sydney at breakfast or in Chicago the night before.

Nothing about the game is a measurement. Every score on it is the rating already published in that place's guide, on the same four bands the Nausea Index ranks and the world nausea map plots. Equal ratings tie, which is exactly why two places in the same band are never paired against each other here.

Every place the game can ask about (82)

The full pool, grouped by band. This is the answer key: read it and the game gets much easier, which is a fair trade for a page that is meant to send you to the guides.

Notorious 92 ยท 22

The top band. Places whose own guide reports heavy motion as the norm.

Rough 75 ยท 30

Regularly uncomfortable, and worth preparing for.

Manageable 50 ยท 21

Middling. Bad days happen, most days do not.

Gentle 25 ยท 9

The calm end. Rarely a problem for most people.

Frequently asked questions

What is The Daily Rough Guess?

A five round guessing game. Each round shows two places we have rated for motion sickness and asks which one is rougher. Pick one, see both ratings, move on. It takes about a minute.

Does everyone get the same puzzle?

Yes. The five pairs are generated from the UTC date, so every player on a given UTC day sees the same five in the same order, wherever they are. Nothing is randomised per visitor, which is what makes scores comparable.

When does the puzzle change?

At 00:00 UTC. That is one moment worldwide rather than local midnight, so the puzzle changes in the middle of the evening in Los Angeles and mid morning in Tokyo. The countdown on the page runs to that moment.

How are the ratings decided?

Each place inherits the risk rating already published in its own Dizzout guide, on four bands: gentle 25, manageable 50, rough 75, notorious 92. Nothing is measured for the game, and a pair is only asked when the two places sit in different bands, so no round is a coin flip.

How does the streak work?

Play on two consecutive UTC days and the streak goes up by one. Miss a day and it starts again at one. The streak lives in your browser on this device, so clearing site data or switching device starts a fresh one. There is no account.

Why are theme parks not in the game?

Because they carry no score. Our park guides publish a written profile of what a lineup does to people rather than a rating, so asking whether one park is rougher than another would need a number nobody published. Only rated places are in the pool.
