Why the Cabot Strait gets rough
Position and exposure. The strait is about 110 km wide and open on both sides: North Atlantic swell rolls in freely from the south-east, and the Gulf of St Lawrence gives north-westerly winds a long fetch from the other direction. The storm track that carries lows up the North American east coast runs straight over it, most actively from autumn through winter, and marine forecasts for the strait carry gale warnings regularly in those months. The Gulf's outflow current adds a wind-against-current effect, and in late winter sea ice pushed down from the Gulf can crowd the western crossing.

July and August are the settled core, with June and early September close behind. From October the east-coast storm track wakes up, and November through March is the rough season: repeated gales, the occasional full storm, and winter cancellations that can hold traffic for a day or more. Late winter adds sea ice from the Gulf to the mix. The Argentia route sensibly confines itself to the warm half of the year; the Port aux Basques route runs all winter and plans around the weather as it comes.
