Most motion sickness research happens in laboratory drums and simulators, which makes Turner and Griffin's coach-travel work unusual and valuable β it is a large field study of real passengers on real roads. They surveyed 3,256 travelers across 56 private-hire coach journeys and found forward visibility was among the strongest environmental predictors of who got sick. The roughly threefold gap between the best and worst views is a bigger effect than most remedies on this page can claim, and it costs nothing. The mechanism is straightforward under sensory-conflict theory: motion sickness comes from your inner ear reporting movement your eyes cannot confirm. A distant, stable reference gives your visual system the confirmation it is missing. - It needs a real distant reference. A phone screen, a seat-back or the wall of a cabin will not do the job β those move with you and add to the conflict rather than resolving it.
- Below deck on a ship, or in a windowless seat, there is no horizon to look at. That is the situation where closing your eyes is the better move.
- It competes directly with reading, screens and paperwork. The fix and the thing you wanted to do on the journey are often mutually exclusive.

- Look as far ahead as you can, not at passing scenery near the road β near objects sweep across your vision and make things worse.
- On a boat, watch the actual horizon line rather than the deck, the rail or the waves.
