Cruise cabin picker
The cabin you book is the one motion decision you cannot change once you sail. This tool reads your ship's motion rating and shows where on the ship you will feel the least movement, with a schematic of why. It is informational, and it points you to the app if you want drug-free help on board.
The steadiest cabin on any cruise ship is midship, on a lower deck, closest to the ship's centre of gravity. That spot swings through the shortest arc when the ship pitches and rolls, so it feels the least motion. The bow, the stern and the upper decks move the most. Ship size matters too: a larger ship in normal seas moves less than a smaller one.

Find your steadiest cabin
Pick your ship, or a ship class, then where on the ship you are thinking of staying.
A cabin midship, on a lower deck sits in the steadiest zone on this ship.
Icon of the Seas moves very little in normal conditions.
- This ship moves very little in normal conditions, based on its size and stabilisers.
- Midship sits over the ship's centre of gravity, the pivot point pitch and roll turn around.
- Lower decks are closer to the waterline, so roll swings them through a shorter arc.
Recommended cabins on Icon of the Seas: Decks 6 to 8, midship.
This is the spot the whole guide points to. Nice pick.
Worked example: Icon of the Seas
Icon of the Seas is Royal Caribbean's Icon Class and is rated very low for motion, so it moves very little in normal conditions. Take a cabin midship on a lower deck and you are in the steadiest zone the ship has. On Icon of the Seas, the recommended cabins for motion-sensitive passengers are Decks 6 to 8, midship.
Key facts
- The steadiest cabin on a cruise ship is midship, on a lower deck, closest to the centre of gravity.
- The bow, the stern and the upper decks feel the most pitch and roll.
- Ship size is the single biggest factor in motion: larger ships in normal seas move less.
- On Icon of the Seas, the recommended cabins for motion-sensitive passengers are Decks 6 to 8, midship.
- A cabin midship, on a lower deck sits in the steadiest zone on this ship.
How this works
A ship pitches (bow and stern rise and fall) and rolls (side to side) around its centre of gravity, which sits low and near the middle. The further a cabin is from that centre, toward the ends or up the decks, the longer the arc it travels on every swing, and the more motion you feel. So two things set how steady your cabin is: how much the ship moves overall, which is mostly its size, and where your cabin sits on it.
The tool combines both. It reads each ship's motion rating from our cruise data, then ranks your chosen spot from steadiest (midship, lower) to most motion (an end, up high). The recommended cabin range shown for a named ship is that ship's own figure, not an invented layout. The read is qualitative on purpose: it tells you which spots move less, not a number for how sick you will feel.
How to read your result
- Steadiest zone means midship and low. If your cabin is here, you have the calmest spot the ship offers.
- Fairly steady means you are close, a middle deck or one step off centre. Comfortable for most people in normal seas.
- More motion here means an end of the ship or an upper deck. Fine on a calm sea, more noticeable when it is rough.
A steady cabin lowers how much motion you feel. It will not make you immune to seasickness, so pair it with your usual preparations and a plan for if it starts.

Frequently asked questions
Where is the best cabin to avoid seasickness on a cruise?
Midship, on a lower deck. That is the spot closest to the ship's centre of gravity, the pivot point that pitch and roll turn around, so it swings through the shortest arc. The bow and stern and the upper decks feel the most motion.
Does a lower deck really feel steadier than a higher one?
Yes. Roll rotates the ship around a low axis, so a cabin higher up travels further with each swing than one near the waterline. A midship cabin low in the ship gets the least of both pitch and roll.
How does ship size affect motion?
Larger ships displace more water and are more stable, so a very large modern ship in normal conditions moves little. Ship size is the single biggest factor in how much motion passengers feel, and most large ships also carry stabilisers.
Is this a real deck plan for my ship?
No. The diagram is a schematic of the physics, not a deck plan. We do not publish invented layouts. The recommended cabin range shown for each ship comes from that ship's own record in our data.
Will a good cabin stop seasickness completely?
No cabin is a sure thing. A steady cabin lowers how much motion you feel, but rough seas, your own susceptibility and time of year all matter. Pack your usual preparations and pick a good cabin together.
