The short answer
The Roadster pulls harder, but its passenger always sits in front. The Model S Plaid seats five, and riders in the back have it worst. Day to day, regenerative braking and the way the car stops matter more to a sensitive passenger than either car's launch numbers. Launch runs in either car belong on a closed course.
The Roadster's numbers are all Tesla claims for now, and no independent test exists yet. The Plaid is already on the road. So this compares the two from the one seat that matters here: the passenger's.

Side by side
| Car | Seats | 0 to 60 mph | Average over the run | Where a passenger sits | Availability |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Roadster Performance | 2 | Under 1.6 seconds (Tesla claim) | At least about 1.7 g | Front, beside the driver | By reservation |
| Roadster Thrust | 2 | Under 0.9 seconds (Tesla claim) | At least about 3 g | Front, beside the driver | Limited release |
| Roadster Rocket | 1 | Under 0.59 seconds (Tesla claim) | At least about 4.6 g | No passenger seat | Invite only, not in all regions |
| Model S Plaid | 5 | About two seconds (rated) | About 1.4 g | Front, or one of three rear seats | Already on the road |
The seat decides more than the launch
In a Roadster Performance or Thrust, the only passenger seat is in front. That is the seat our Tesla guide calls the most settled in any Tesla: the widest forward view and the least pitch, with your eyes on the horizon.
A Plaid can carry three more people behind. Our Model S page notes that rear-seat riders, and anyone watching the center screen instead of the road, tend to feel the car more than the driver does. If you are the sensitive one in a Plaid, claim the front seat. The best seat guide covers every other vehicle.
Roadster only (Left of the diagram)
- Passenger always in front
- Thrusters on two of three trims
- No comfort settings announced yet
Both (Middle of the diagram)
- Regen braking when the driver lifts off
- No engine note to warn you
- Launch runs belong on a closed course
Model S Plaid only (Right of the diagram)
- Seats five, three in the back
- Chill acceleration
- Already on the road
Roadster details are Tesla claims. Tesla has not said which comfort settings the Roadster will have.
Day to day, the stops matter more
A launch is a few seconds, and you can see it coming if the driver warns you. Regenerative braking happens every time the driver lifts off, on every drive, with no engine note to warn a passenger. Our Tesla guide puts most Tesla car sickness down to it, and it applies to both cars.
Which EVs let you soften it, and where the setting lives in each, is in the best EVs for motion sickness.
Settings the Plaid gives a passenger
- Chill acceleration. It softens how quickly the car builds speed. While stopped, tap Controls, then Dynamics, then Acceleration, and choose Chill. On software older than 2024.14 the menu is called Pedals & Steering.
- Stopping mode, if the car lists it. On Teslas that offer it, Creep or Roll eases the pitch at the end of a stop, where Hold can tip you forward. Our Model S page notes that the Model S does not expose that selector, so check the menu of the car you ride in rather than counting on it.
- A gentle lift-off. Ask the driver to ease off the accelerator over two or three seconds instead of lifting sharply. Our Tesla guide calls it the single biggest change on any Tesla, whatever its software.
Tesla has not said which comfort settings the Roadster will have.
Which is easier on a passenger?
For one passenger who gets the front seat either way, the two are closer than the numbers suggest. The Roadster's launches are far harder, but they are short and optional, and they belong on a closed course. The everyday regen pull is in both cars.
For a family, the Plaid is the only one of the two with back seats, and the back is where a sensitive rider struggles most. Put that person in front.

Frequently asked questions
Is the Tesla Roadster faster than the Model S Plaid?
On Tesla's claims, yes. Tesla claims 0 to 60 mph in under 1.6 seconds for the Roadster Performance, under 0.9 seconds for the Thrust and under 0.59 seconds for the Rocket. The Model S Plaid is rated at about two seconds. No independent test of the new Roadster exists yet.
Is the Roadster or the Plaid better for a passenger who gets carsick?
It depends on the seat. A Roadster passenger always sits in front, which is the most settled seat in any Tesla. The Plaid seats five, and back-seat riders tend to feel it most. Day to day, regenerative braking and the way the car stops matter more than either car's launch numbers.
Does the Model S Plaid have Chill mode?
Yes. Chill acceleration softens how quickly the car builds speed. While stopped, tap Controls, then Dynamics, then Acceleration, and choose Chill. The other lever is the driver easing off the accelerator over two or three seconds.
What comfort settings will the Tesla Roadster have?
Tesla has not said which comfort settings the Roadster will have. Its only passenger seat is in front, which helps, and launch runs belong on a closed course.
