The Tesla passenger starter pack: motion sickness edition

By Dizzout editorial team3 min read

The short answer

Every Tesla passenger who gets queasy ends up with the same kit. Most of it is habits: calling the front seat, keeping your eyes far ahead, asking the driver to pull away gently and knowing where Chill acceleration lives. The pack covers every Tesla, not only the new Roadster. Each item says why it is in the pack, checked against our remedy verdicts, and the ones nobody has tested properly say so.

The starter pack

The Tesla passenger starter pack
  1. Asking "are you about to launch?" at every green light

Why it works: Motion you can predict is easier to sit through, which is the advantage drivers have. The answer you want is a gentle pull-away; hard launches belong on a closed course.

  2. The back of your head, parked on the headrest

Why it works: A head that starts against the headrest moves less when the car surges or slows, so your inner ear has less to report.

  3. Eyes on the horizon, phone face down

Why it works: Looking far ahead is the best-supported free fix there is, and a screen in your lap is the classic trigger.

  4. Calling shotgun with conviction

Why it works: The front passenger seat, with eyes on the horizon, is the most settled spot in any Tesla: the widest forward view and the least pitch.

  5. Knowing exactly where Chill lives

Why it works: Chill acceleration softens launches. While stopped: Controls, then Dynamics, then Acceleration, then Chill.

  6. Lobbying for Creep or Roll instead of Hold

Why it works: Where the car offers them, Creep or Roll eases the pitch at the end of a stop. Many newer Teslas list only Hold, so check the menu first.

  7. A window cracked

Why it is here: Cool air on your face feels good and usually comes with a view out. Nobody has tested fresh air properly, so it is comfort, not a proven fix.

  8. Ginger, taken before you set off

Why it works: It probably helps a little, on the stomach rather than the inner ear: an open-sea trial used 1 g of powdered root. Candy is not that dose, and ask a pharmacist first if you take blood thinners.

  9. A light snack, not a feast

Why it is here: An empty stomach is not protective, and a heavy, greasy meal is the usual thing to skip. Nobody has run the trial, so this is sensible habit, not a proven fix.

  10. Headphones already in

Why it is here: Dizzout plays sound therapy through any headphones for passengers: drug-free, no drowsiness, relief in about 90 seconds.

A meme format with real reasons. Each reason is checked against our remedy verdicts and our Tesla guide, and the untested items say so.

The verdicts behind the pack: looking at the horizon, putting the phone away, ginger, fresh air and eating before travel. The Tesla settings come from our Tesla guide.

Why Teslas need a starter pack at all

Most Tesla car sickness comes down to regenerative braking. Lift off the accelerator and the car slows firmly straight away, with no engine note dropping to warn a passenger. A quiet cabin, a firm ride and controls on a center screen add to it.

The new Roadster adds launches on a different scale: Tesla claims 0 to 60 mph in under 1.6 seconds for the Performance trim. The pack still applies there, on a closed course, which is the only place launch runs belong. The details are in our Roadster passenger guide.

If you are choosing a car rather than a seat, the EVs that let you soften regen are listed model by model.

What to leave out of the pack

  • Motion sickness glasses. In the only placebo-controlled test, a small one, fluid-filled glasses did no better than the same glasses with the fluid drained out. Our glasses verdict has the details.
  • Coffee as a remedy. The only placebo-controlled test of caffeine on its own that we found showed no significant effect. Drink it because you like it. Our caffeine verdict explains the rest.

Frequently asked questions

Where is Chill mode in a Tesla?

While the car is stopped, tap Controls, then Dynamics, then Acceleration, and choose Chill. On cars running software older than 2024.14 the menu is called Pedals & Steering. Chill softens how quickly the car builds speed.

Do Creep and Roll help with car sickness in a Tesla?

They ease the pitch at the end of a stop compared with Hold, which can tip a passenger forward as the car halts. Not every Tesla still offers them: US Model 3 and Model Y built after January 1, 2024 list only Hold. Check Controls, then Dynamics, then Stopping Mode while in Park.

Where should a carsick passenger sit in a Tesla?

In the front passenger seat, with eyes on the road far ahead. It gives the widest forward view and the least pitch. Leave the touchscreen to the driver and keep your phone face down.
