Why Teslas can make you car sick — and what helps
Most people feel car sick in a Tesla because of regenerative braking. Lift off the accelerator and the car slows firmly straight away, without brake lights, engine noise or any of the cues that normally warn a passenger. Why it happens in a Tesla
Tesla builds its cars around one-pedal driving. Regenerative braking is a deliberate efficiency feature: lifting off the accelerator turns the motor into a generator, recovering energy and slowing the car firmly. It works well for the driver, who initiates it and knows it is coming. A passenger does not. The deceleration arrives with no engine note dropping, no brake lights ahead, no weight shift they chose. Researchers studying this call the rate of change of acceleration jerk, and passengers are unusually sensitive to it. Three more Tesla traits stack on top: a very quiet cabin removes the sound cues that normally predict speed changes; a low center of gravity and firm suspension transmit road inputs sharply; and putting controls on a center screen pulls eyes down, away from the horizon.
One-pedal driving
Lifting off the accelerator produces firm, sustained slowing rather than coasting. The driver expects it; a passenger reading the road ahead sees no brake lights and gets no warning that deceleration is starting.
A near-silent cabin
With no engine note rising and falling, passengers lose the sound cue that normally predicts acceleration and braking. The body is left to detect motion by feel alone.
Full torque from a standstill
Electric motors deliver full torque immediately, so pulling away and overtaking happen more abruptly than in a gas car. Repeated surge-and-slow cycles in traffic are the hardest pattern to tolerate.
Firm, low-slung ride
A heavy floor-mounted battery gives a low center of gravity and little body roll, but the firm damping and large wheels pass sharper, higher-frequency movements through to occupants.
Screen-based controls
Climate, vents and media all live on the center touchscreen. Adjusting them means looking down and sideways at close range while the car moves, which is a classic trigger.
What actually helps in a Tesla
1. Switch acceleration to Chill
While stopped, tap Controls, then Dynamics, then Acceleration, and choose Chill. It softens how quickly the car builds speed. On cars still running software older than 2024.14 this menu is called Pedals & Steering.
2. Use Reduced deceleration if the car offers it
The Model Y refreshed for 2025 added a Deceleration Mode setting under Controls, then Dynamics, with Standard and Reduced options. Reduced lets the car coast further before slowing.
3. Check whether your car has a regen setting at all
Tesla offered a Standard and Low regenerative braking choice on earlier vehicles and dropped it from newly built cars from around mid-2020. Some cars and markets still show Controls, then Dynamics, then Regenerative Braking, with Standard and Low. Look before assuming: on many cars built since, the option is simply not there.
4. Check Stopping Mode
While in Park, open Controls, then Dynamics, then Stopping Mode. Model 3 and Model Y built for the US after 1 January 2024 offer only Hold; earlier cars also list Creep and Roll, and Tesla has said it will not remove them from cars that already have them.
5. Ask the driver to lift off gradually
Feathering off the accelerator over two or three seconds, rather than lifting sharply, flattens the deceleration. This is the single biggest change on any Tesla, whatever its software.
6. Sit in the front and look far ahead
The front passenger seat gives the widest forward view and the least pitch. Keep the vents blowing on your face, and leave the touchscreen to the driver.

Why do I get car sick in a Tesla but not in other cars?+
Because the pattern of movement is different, not stronger. Gas cars coast when the driver lifts off; a Tesla slows. That single change removes the pause your brain uses to predict what happens next. Add the missing engine sound and you lose two cues at once. Many passengers adapt over several journeys, and drivers rarely feel it because they control the pedal.
Why do people get car sick in Teslas more than in other EVs?+
Teslas combine several things other electric cars split up. Regenerative braking is strong and, on most models, fixed. Acceleration is quick even in mid-range versions. Almost every control sits on a center screen. Other manufacturers often let you dial regeneration down or switch one-pedal driving off entirely, so the same underlying physics feels gentler to a passenger.
