Best EVs for motion sickness: where to turn regen down, model by model
The best EV for a motion-sensitive passenger is one whose regenerative braking can be turned down or off, because the strong slowing when the driver lifts off the accelerator is a commonly reported trigger. In our guide, the Polestar 2, Chevrolet Equinox EV and Ford Mustang Mach-E have an Off setting for one-pedal driving, and the Chevrolet Bolt EUV uses it only when its button is on. The Hyundai Ioniq 5, Kia EV6 and Kia EV9 step regen down to level 0 with the right paddle, the BMW iX can be set to Low in D, and the Volkswagen ID.4 mostly coasts in D. Tesla stopped offering a regen strength choice on cars delivered from around mid 2020, and the Model Y refreshed for 2025 added a Reduced deceleration setting. No setting suits every passenger, so test the exact car from the passenger seat.

EVs where you can switch one-pedal driving off
With one-pedal driving off, the car slows less when the driver lifts off, and the brake pedal does the stopping, closer to a familiar gas car.
Polestar Polestar 2
Gentlest option: Off. Where: One Pedal Drive, under Drive on the center display.
Tap the car symbol on the center display, select Drive, then set One Pedal Drive to Low or Off. Standard is the factory default. Polestar says that with Off no braking power is applied and the car rolls freely when the driver lifts off.

Chevrolet Equinox EV
Gentlest option: Off. Where: Drive & Park, in Vehicle Controls.
On the center display, tap Vehicle Controls, then Drive & Park, and choose Off, On/Normal or High. Chevrolet describes Off as traditional two-pedal driving, similar to a gasoline vehicle. Some cars also show a One-Pedal Driving button on the center display for a one-tap switch.
Chevrolet Bolt EUV
Gentlest option: One-Pedal Driving off. Where: Button at the bottom of the shifter.
One-Pedal Driving is a mode the driver turns on with the button at the bottom of the electronic shifter, so leaving it off is the gentler setup. The Bolt EUV has no L position. The Regen on Demand paddle on the back of the steering wheel adds slowing only when the driver pulls it.

Ford Mustang Mach-E
Gentlest option: 1-Pedal Drive off. Where: Controls, then Drive Modes, on the touchscreen.
Tap the Controls icon in the upper-left corner of the touchscreen, which opens the Drive Modes menu, and switch 1-Pedal Drive off. Ford says 1-Pedal Drive can be chosen in every drive mode and greatly increases regenerative braking. Ford also describes its Whisper mode as having a lighter coasting deceleration response.

EVs where you can step regen down
No single off switch, but the strength of the slowing has levels, and the lowest is gentle.
Hyundai Ioniq 5
Gentlest option: Level 0. Where: Right steering-wheel paddle.
Each pull of the right paddle lowers regen by one level, and the left paddle raises it. Do not hold the right paddle: holding it for over a second switches the Smart Regeneration system on or off. If the car is switched off at level 0, it comes back at level 1, so check the level at the start of each drive.

Kia EV6
Gentlest option: Level 0. Where: Right steering-wheel paddle.
Each pull of the right paddle lowers regen by one level, from 3 down to 0, and the left paddle raises it. Do not hold the right paddle: Kia's manual says holding it switches the automatic regen level change on or off. i-Pedal, the one-pedal mode, comes on only when the left paddle is pulled again at level 3.

Kia EV9
Gentlest option: Level 0. Where: Right steering-wheel paddle.
Each pull of the right paddle lowers regen by one level, down to level 0, and the left paddle raises it. Kia's manual says the setting returns to level 1 when the car is restarted from level 0, so check the level at the start of each drive.

BMW iX
Gentlest option: Low, in D. Where: Recuperation setting in the iDrive menu.
As BMW describes it, adaptive recuperation is the default in drive position D, and the driver can instead choose a high, medium or low setting in the iDrive menu. Position B switches to the highest setting, with a one-pedal feel, so Low in D is the gentlest choice.

Volkswagen ID.4
Gentlest option: D, which mostly coasts. Where: Gear selector on the right of the steering column.
Volkswagen says the ID.4 coasts in most cases in D when the driver lifts off. B, selected by twisting the gear selector forward twice from N, engages energy recuperation when coasting; Volkswagen's 2020 launch material put that slowing at up to about 0.13 g, short of a standstill. Stay in D for the gentlest ride.

Teslas: it depends on the car
Which controls a Tesla has depends on the model, the build date and the market, so check your own car's menus.
Tesla Model Y
Gentlest option: Reduced deceleration, on the 2025 refresh. Where: Controls, then Dynamics.
The Model Y refreshed for 2025 has a Deceleration setting under Dynamics with two options, Standard and Reduced; Reduced slows the car less when the driver lifts off. Earlier Model Y cars delivered from around mid 2020 have no regen strength choice. On US Model Y cars built after 1 January 2024, Hold is the only stopping mode.

Tesla Model 3
Gentlest option: No regen choice on cars delivered since mid 2020. Where: Acceleration, under Controls, then Dynamics.
Tesla removed the choice of regen strength from new cars delivered from around mid 2020. What the driver can still lower is acceleration, under Controls, Dynamics, Acceleration. On US Model 3 cars built after 1 January 2024, Hold is the only stopping mode.

Tesla Model S
Gentlest option: No regen choice on cars delivered since mid 2020. Where: Chill acceleration, in a custom drive mode under Controls, then Dynamics.
Tesla removed the choice of regen strength from new cars delivered from around mid 2020. Under Controls, Dynamics, a custom drive mode can set Acceleration to Chill, which Tesla's manual says limits acceleration for a slightly smoother and gentler ride. A gradual lift off the accelerator softens the slowing.

Other EVs in our guide
These are left out of the table above because their regen controls were not confirmed against the maker's own documentation when the table was checked on 3 October 2026. Their pages cover what owners report.
Why the regen setting matters
Strong regenerative braking slows the car the moment the driver lifts off the accelerator. In a 2025 on-road study of 16 motion-sensitive passengers, high regeneration produced more motion sickness than a lower setting. It is one small study, so read what that study can and cannot tell you before you write off any EV, and compare every car model on seating and visibility too.
Before you buy
- Take the test drive from the passenger seat, with someone else driving.
- Include stop-and-go traffic, where the regen rhythm matters most.
- Ask to see the regen menu and try its gentlest setting on the same route.
- Check the forward view from the seat the sensitive rider will use.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best EV for motion sickness?+
One whose regenerative braking you can turn down or off. In our guide that means the Polestar 2 (One Pedal Drive can be set to Off), the Chevrolet Equinox EV (One-Pedal Driving can be set to Off), the Chevrolet Bolt EUV (One-Pedal Driving is a button you can leave off), the Ford Mustang Mach-E (1-Pedal Drive switches off under Controls, then Drive Modes), the Hyundai Ioniq 5, Kia EV6 and Kia EV9 (the right paddle steps regen down to level 0), the BMW iX (recuperation can be set to Low in D) and the Volkswagen ID.4 (D mostly coasts). Test the exact car from the passenger seat, because the driver, the route and the seat matter too.
Can you turn off one-pedal driving?+
In some EVs. The Polestar 2's One Pedal Drive and the Chevrolet Equinox EV's One-Pedal Driving each have an Off setting, and the Ford Mustang Mach-E's 1-Pedal Drive switches off under Controls, then Drive Modes. The Bolt EUV uses one-pedal driving only when its button is on. The Hyundai Ioniq 5, Kia EV6 and Kia EV9 step regen down to level 0, which returns to level 1 after a restart in the Ioniq 5 and EV9.
Can you lower regen in a Tesla?+
It depends on the car. Tesla stopped offering a regen strength choice on cars delivered from around mid 2020. The Model Y refreshed for 2025 has a Deceleration setting under Dynamics with Standard and Reduced. On a Model S or Model X, Chill acceleration gives a gentler ride, and on any Tesla a gradual lift off the accelerator softens the slowing.
