Why Hyundais can make you car sick — and what helps

Hyundai's electrified models slow themselves when the driver lifts off the accelerator, and that unannounced deceleration is what most passengers react to. The useful part is that Hyundai, unlike some rivals, makes the strength adjustable on its EVs. Why it happens in a Hyundai

Hyundai's EVs and hybrids recover energy whenever the driver lifts off. This is a deliberate efficiency feature and it works: the motor becomes a generator and puts charge back into the battery. For the person in the passenger seat, though, it means the car slows without brake lights, without an engine note dropping and without the small pause that normally precedes braking. At the strongest setting, i-Pedal, the car will decelerate all the way to a standstill on the accelerator alone. Two other Hyundai traits contribute. The EVs are near-silent, so the sound cues that usually predict speed changes are absent. And Hyundai's larger family models, Palisade in particular, are tuned soft and sit tall, which produces slow body float over undulating roads.

Adjustable regeneration, often left high

The strongest level and i-Pedal feel efficient and involving to drive, and they produce the firmest lift-off deceleration for anyone not holding the pedal.

i-Pedal brings the car to a complete stop using the accelerator alone. The final part of that stop is the sharpest, and it happens repeatedly in town traffic and at junctions.

Set to Auto, the car varies regeneration according to the vehicle ahead. It is smooth for the driver but the timing is decided by the car, so passengers get even less warning.

Palisade sits high and is damped for comfort rather than control. Body movements are slow and gentle, and the third row sits behind the rear axle where vertical motion is largest.

What actually helps in a Hyundai

  1. 1. Pull the right paddle to step regeneration down

    Each pull of the right paddle behind the steering wheel drops the regeneration level by one. At the lowest level the car coasts on lift-off much like a gas car. The left paddle raises it again.

  2. 2. Come out of i-Pedal

    i-Pedal sits above the numbered levels and is the strongest setting. Pulling the right paddle exits it. It does not always stay selected between journeys, so it is worth checking.

  3. 3. Set the level on the screen instead

    The regeneration level can also be chosen from the EV section of the vehicle settings menu on the center display, which is easier than counting paddle pulls while the car is moving.

  4. 4. Avoid Auto regeneration when a passenger feels ill

    Auto lets the car decide how hard to slow based on traffic ahead, and holding the right paddle for about a second is what turns it on, which is easy to trigger by accident when you meant a single pull. Hold it again to switch Auto off, then pull to reach a fixed low level. Predictability matters more to passengers than smoothness.

  5. 5. Take the second row in a Palisade

    The second row sits between the axles and has the clearest forward view. The third row is behind the rear axle, where vertical movement is greatest and the windows are smallest.

    Even at the lowest level, an abrupt lift from the accelerator changes speed suddenly. Easing off over two or three seconds smooths the transition more than any menu setting.
