How rough is a Mediterranean cruise? Season by season
In high summer the Mediterranean is one of the calmest places on earth to take a cruise: long stretches of the western basin go glassy for weeks. It is not one sea, though. In July and August the meltemi funnels down the Aegean and can blow hard for days while the west stays flat, and from November to March Atlantic style depressions and the mistral make the whole basin a rougher proposition. Winter Mediterranean cruises are real cruises with real motion.

The strip shows the windier corner of the basin in each month, drawn from our Gulf of Lion and Aegean Sea pages: the winter band is the mistral and Atlantic style lows in the west, and the July and August band is the meltemi in the Aegean. A western itinerary in August, when the west is often glassy, can sit a full band calmer than the strip; the note is the map, the strip is the worst corner.
Why it gets rough here
Winter is driven by depressions entering from the Atlantic and by the mistral, a cold northerly that accelerates down the Rhone valley and can raise waves over 5 metres in the Gulf of Lion between October and March. Summer flips the map: the basin goes quiet except for the meltemi, a dry northerly that blows across the Aegean mostly between June and September, strongest and most persistent from mid July to mid August. Both are named, forecastable winds with favourite territories, which is why the same week can be flat off Ibiza and white capped off Mykonos.
West, Adriatic or Aegean
In July and August a western Mediterranean itinerary, Barcelona, Provence, Italy, is the calm pick, and Greek island routes carry the meltemi risk. In spring and autumn the balance evens out. In winter the west takes the mistral and the Atlantic leftovers, so the sheltered choice is less about geography and more about ship size and that week's forecast. Port heavy itineraries with short overnight hops leave little time in open water in any season.

Cabin choice for this region
Midship low matters most on winter sailings and on Aegean routes in the meltemi window. On a summer western itinerary cabin position is mostly about noise and views, not motion. Is the Mediterranean rough in summer?

Mostly no. The western basin in July and August is regularly glassy. The exception is the Aegean, where the meltemi can blow hard for several days at a time; Greek island itineraries in high summer should expect at least one breezy, choppy day.
Are winter Mediterranean cruises rough?

They can be. From November to March the basin sees Atlantic style depressions and the mistral, and multi day rough spells happen every winter. Lines run winter itineraries on large ships partly for this reason. If you are very motion sensitive, winter here deserves the same preparation as an open Atlantic itinerary.
When is the best month to cruise the Mediterranean if I get seasick?

May, early June, September and October are the best compromise: the winter systems have gone or not yet returned, and you avoid the meltemi peak of mid July to mid August. September in the western basin is often the flattest water of the year.
