Cruise seasickness by region: how rough, and when
Where you cruise and in which month matters more for seasickness than almost any other booking decision. A Baltic week in July and a Drake Passage crossing are not the same holiday. These guides rate 15 cruise regions month by month, name the wind and storm seasons behind the patterns, and point out which itineraries inside each region shelter and which do not.

Which cruise region is calmest?+
In their main seasons: the Baltic, the Mexican Riviera, the Caribbean outside hurricane season, and sheltered Southeast Asia loops from Singapore. All four pair enclosed or lee shore water with itineraries that keep open ocean legs short.
Which cruise region is roughest?+
Antarctica, because the route crosses the Drake Passage, two days each way of open Southern Ocean. Among mainstream itineraries, winter transatlantic crossings and autumn Bay of Biscay repositioning legs have the strongest reputations.
Does the month matter more than the ship?+
Often, yes. The same region can move from its calmest band to its roughest across the year: a September Gulf of Alaska crossing and a June one are different experiences on the identical ship. Pick the month first, then the ship, then the cabin.
How do hurricane and cyclone seasons actually affect a cruise?+
Mostly through rerouting. Lines steer well clear of storms, so the realistic effects are itinerary swaps, missed ports and a day or two of leftover swell. The Caribbean, Mexican Riviera and South Pacific pages cover their seasons' dates and odds.
