The strip blends the four waters on the route, all of which sit at their calmest in May to August on their own pages. Outside the season the same seas run one to two bands rougher, which is why the season is when it is.
Why it gets rough here
The islands sit on the receiving end of the Atlantic storm track, and the difference between seasons is the track's position: from October to March depressions arrive in a queue, while from May to August the track shifts north and high pressure gets a look in. Geography does the rest. The Irish Sea and Channel are partly sheltered shelf seas, while the Minch and the corner past Cape Wrath face longer Atlantic fetch, so the same weather reads differently leg by leg.
Where the open corners are
Clockwise or anticlockwise, the sheltered legs are the Channel and the Irish Sea, and the exposed ones are the top left of the map: the Minch, the Hebridean approaches and the passage around the north of Scotland toward Orkney. Itineraries that trade the far northwest for more Irish Sea and Channel time keep the exposure lower; ones that add St Kilda or open Atlantic scenic cruising accept more.
