Why it gets rough here
Swell generated by mid Atlantic storms arrives at Biscay with thousands of miles of fetch behind it, then runs onto a continental shelf that climbs from more than 4,000 metres deep to under 200 over a short distance, which slows, shortens and steepens the waves. Add a local depression and the bay produces the confused, cross running sea it is famous for. That machinery is seasonal: it needs the Atlantic storm track, which runs at full strength from October to March.
Which sailings dodge the worst
The exposure is a day or so each way between the Channel and the Iberian coast, and no route a cruise ship uses avoids it. What you can choose is the calendar: spring repositions and high summer Mediterranean round trips from Southampton carry much better odds than late autumn ones.
