Is the Sydney Harbour rough? What to expect on the crossing

Mostly no, but the Heads can be rough. Port Jackson is a 19 km harbour with a single entrance, the 2 km wide Sydney Heads, which opens to the Pacific. Swells at the Heads can be too large for the Emerald-class Manly ferries.

Harbour with an open ocean entrance

In the Nausea Index table of the 121 sea crossings we cover, the Sydney Harbour is rated manageable, one of 81 in that band, with 40 rated higher. Full table: the roughest sea crossings, ranked.

Key facts

  • The Sydney Harbour is a harbour, and passenger reports place it in the moderate roughness band.
  • The mechanism behind that reputation: Harbour with an open ocean entrance.
  • Conditions are reported roughest in May, June, July and August.
  • The calmest months are usually January, February, October, November and December.
  • It is also known as Port Jackson.

Why does the Sydney Harbour get rough?

Exposure at the Heads. Port Jackson extends westward from a single entrance, the Sydney Heads, which is 2 km wide. Weatherzone puts the average significant wave height off Sydney in July at 1.65 m. East coast lows, most common in autumn and winter, bring dangerous seas and heavy swells to the coast.

When is the Sydney Harbour roughest?

Autumn and winter are the rougher seasons: east coast lows are more common then, and large southerly swells are a regular winter event. The Bureau of Meteorology calls late autumn and winter the peak season for east coast lows, though they can form all year. Whale-watching cruises run from May to November, so most of their season falls in the rougher half of the year.

The crossings that cross it

RouteTypical durationWhat to know
Circular Quay to Manly (Sydney Ferries F1)about 22 to 30 minutesThe standard Manly ferry, and it passes the Heads. Timetable trips run 22 minutes, or 30 minutes on Freshwater-class ferries.
Circular Quay to Manly (Manly Fast Ferry)20 minutesThe operator gives 20 minutes of travel time between the two Wharf 2 berths.
Whale watching from Circular Quay (Whale Watching Sydney, Express Cruise)2 hoursThe operator says the open ocean is about 15 minutes away. The season runs from May to November.

What helps on this crossing

  • Pick a calmer season if you can. East coast lows, the main cause of severe storms on the NSW coast, are more common in autumn and winter.
  • Settle your eyes on the horizon before the ferry reaches the Heads, and put your phone away for that stretch. The crossing is short either way: 20 minutes on the Fast Ferry, 22 to 30 on the F1.
  • On a whale-watching cruise, the operator says the open ocean is about 15 minutes from Circular Quay. Sit low and near the middle and watch the horizon once you are past the Heads.

For the full toolkit see the seasickness guide, or what to do once it has already started. If the rocking follows you ashore afterwards, that is land sickness, which is normal, and it passes.

Frequently asked questions

Is Sydney Harbour rough in July?

The harbour is usually fine, but July is peak winter at the Heads. Weatherzone puts the average significant wave height off Sydney in July at 1.65 m, and large southerly swells are a regular winter event. Swells can be too large for the Emerald-class Manly ferries.

Is Sydney Harbour rough in January?

January is among the calmer months. East coast lows are more common in autumn and winter, and large southerly swells come less often over the warmer months.

Is the Manly ferry rough?

It can be at the Heads. The ferry passes the Heads, the 2 km wide entrance, and swells there can be too large for the Emerald-class boats, so older Freshwater-class ferries have been seen filling in. The crossing takes 20 minutes on the Fast Ferry and 22 to 30 on the F1.

Are whale-watching boats rougher than the harbour ferries?

They meet the open ocean. The 2-hour Express Cruise leaves Circular Quay and reaches the open ocean in about 15 minutes, and the whale season runs from May to November.
