Key facts

  • The Kattegat is a sea, and passenger reports place it in the moderate roughness band.
  • The mechanism behind that reputation: Shallow sea with tiny tides.
  • Conditions are reported roughest in January, February, October, November and December.
  • The calmest months are usually April, May, June, July and August.

Why does the Kattegat get rough?

The Kattegat is a sea of roughly 24,000 square kilometres, and most of it is less than 25 m deep, with an average of 22 m. Its tides change the water level by only about 15 to 30 cm. Wikipedia notes it can be dangerous to navigate because of sandy, stony reefs and tricky shifting currents. At the Läsö Ost buoy, the highest significant wave heights were 3.9 m in January 2006, 3.9 m in January 2008 and 3.6 m in an August 2008 storm.

When is the Kattegat roughest?

HELCOM's 2006 and 2008 fact sheets both report a 3.9 m reading at Läsö Ost in January. In 2006 the spring from March to May was mostly calm, with a highest reading of 2.2 m, the summer from June to August stayed under 2 m, and September and October peaked at 2.6 m. In 2008 April to July was calmer than usual, though an August storm gave 3.6 m, and the Läsö Ost measurements have since been discontinued.

What helps on this crossing

  • Pick spring or summer if you can. HELCOM's buoy notes put the biggest readings in January, with March to August the calmest stretch in 2006.
  • On the 3 hours 30 minute Frederikshavn to Gothenburg run, sit low and near the middle, and spend the open stretch looking at the horizon rather than a screen.
  • When you have a choice, take the shorter crossing. Molslinjen lists about 75 minutes for Odden to Ebeltoft and about 90 for Odden to Aarhus.

For the full toolkit see the seasickness guide, or what to do once it has already started. For what the trials actually say about the oldest trick on that list, see the verdict on looking at the horizon. If the rocking follows you ashore afterwards, that is land sickness, which is normal, and it passes.
