Key facts

  • The Sea of Åland is a sea, and passenger reports place it in the moderate roughness band.
  • The mechanism behind that reputation: Deep basin joined to the open Baltic.
  • Conditions are reported roughest in January, February, November and December.
  • The calmest months are usually April, May, June, July, August and September.
  • It is also known as Åland Sea / Ålands hav / Ahvenanmeri.

Why does the Sea of Åland get rough?

The Sea of Åland is a waterway in the southern Gulf of Bothnia, between Åland and Sweden, linking the Bothnian Sea with the Baltic Sea proper. Its mean depth is 75 m, and a trench on the bottom reaches 301 m, the second-deepest spot in the Baltic Sea. To the south it joins the northern Baltic Proper, where the Finnish Meteorological Institute recorded a significant wave height of 8.2 m in the storm Rafael on 22 December 2004. On the two hour crossing, Eckerö Linjen says it slows down when conditions require and can pick different fairways in different weather.

When is the Sea of Åland roughest?

Modelled wave data (ERA5 reanalysis) for a point in the sea puts the highest months from November to February, with an average daily maximum of about 1.4 m in January. The lowest months are May, June and July, at about 0.7 m. Eckerö Linjen runs M/S Eckerö daily and says land stays in sight on its two hour crossing.

What helps on this crossing

  • If you only need to reach Åland, take the short Grisslehamn to Eckerö crossing. Eckerö Linjen says it takes two hours and land is in sight the whole time.
  • On the overnight ships, book a cabin so you can lie flat. Tallink lists about 10 hours for Turku to Stockholm and about 17 for Stockholm to Helsinki.
  • Watch the horizon or the passing coast from a middle window rather than looking at a screen, and travel from May to September if you can.

For the full toolkit see the seasickness guide, or what to do once it has already started. For what the trials actually say about the oldest trick on that list, see the verdict on looking at the horizon. If the rocking follows you ashore afterwards, that is land sickness, which is normal, and it passes.
