Is the St George's Channel rough? What to expect on the crossing
Often in winter, and less so from May to September. Stena Line schedules Fishguard to Rosslare at 3 hours 30 minutes, and Irish Ferries says Pembroke to Rosslare takes just over 4 hours port to port. A UK marine assessment says wave heights fall off markedly from the exposed north and west into the Irish Sea, and that the wave heights it monitors are strongly seasonal with mid-winter maxima.

Why is the St George's Channel so rough?
St George's Channel is a sea channel connecting the Irish Sea to the north with the Celtic Sea to the south-west, and it separates Wexford from St Davids. In Ireland the name now usually means the narrowest part, between Carnsore Point in County Wexford and St David's Head in Pembrokeshire. A UK marine assessment says wave heights are greatest in the most exposed waters of the north and west and decrease markedly into the Irish Sea, which it says may be due to shallow water dissipating long waves from the open ocean and a limited fetch for the directions of frequent wind. Even so, it says the wave heights it monitors are strongly seasonal with mid-winter maxima, though the relative size of the seasonal cycle decreases in the Irish Sea.
When is the St George's Channel roughest?
A UK marine assessment puts the timing of the seasonal peak at mid-January in the south and the end of January or early February in the north. Modelled wave data (ERA5 reanalysis) for the middle of the channel puts December to February highest, with an average daily maximum of about 2.9 m in December, and June and July lowest at about 1.3 m. Stena Line's timetable lists its 01:30 Fishguard departure at 4 hours on 15 December 2026, against 3 hours 30 minutes on 14 July 2027.

What helps on this crossing
- Choose a May to September sailing if you can. Modelled wave data puts June and July lowest and December to February highest.
- On the 3 hours 30 minute Stena Line crossing, sit low and near the middle, and look at the horizon rather than a screen.
- Check which sailing you booked. Stena Line's timetable lists the 01:30 Fishguard departure at 4 hours on 15 December 2026, while the 14:00 sailing is 3 hours 30 minutes.
For the full toolkit see the seasickness guide, or what to do once it has already started. For what the trials actually say about the oldest trick on that list, see the verdict on looking at the horizon. If the rocking follows you ashore afterwards, that is land sickness, which is normal, and it passes.
