Key facts

  • The Strait of Messina is a strait, and passenger reports place it in the moderate roughness band.
  • The mechanism behind that reputation: Opposed tides drive strong currents through a 3 km gap.
  • Conditions are reported roughest in January, February, March, November and December.
  • The calmest months are usually June, July and August.
  • It is also known as Stretto di Messina.

Why does the Strait of Messina get rough?

The strait is 3.1 km wide at its narrowest and about 250 m deep at most. Tides in the Tyrrhenian Sea to the north and the Ionian Sea to the south are about five hours out of phase, and a 2023 Scientific Reports study says that and the shape of the strait push currents up to about 3 m/s. There is also a natural whirlpool in the northern part of the strait.

When is the Strait of Messina roughest?

Caronte & Tourist runs the crossing 7 days a week, 24 hours a day, with departures every 40 minutes. A 40-year Mediterranean wave climatology finds the stormy period from November to March, with January the peak, and the calm period from June to August. The operator says service may be modified or suspended in adverse weather and advises checking the service status before you travel.

What helps on this crossing

  • Sit where you can see the horizon and keep your eyes on it. The crossing takes about 20 minutes, so any motion ends quickly.
  • Check the operator's notices on its website or app before you travel. Caronte & Tourist says crossings can be suspended in strong winds or rough seas.
  • Put your phone away and breathe slowly while the ferry crosses the narrows. At its narrowest the strait is 3.1 km wide, so land is close the whole way.

If the rocking follows you ashore afterwards, that is land sickness, which is normal, and it passes.
