Key facts

  • The Saronic Gulf is a gulf, and passenger reports place it in the moderate roughness band.
  • The mechanism behind that reputation: Summer meltemi, partly sheltered by Attica.
  • Conditions are reported roughest in January, February, March, July, August, November and December.
  • The calmest months are usually April, May, June, September and October.
  • It is also known as Gulf of Aegina / Saronikรณs kรณlpos.

Why does the Saronic Gulf get rough?

The Saronic Gulf is formed between the peninsulas of Attica and Argolis and forms part of the Aegean Sea, and Hydra lies some 37 nautical miles from Piraeus. The etesian wind, called the meltemi, blows periodically from about mid-May to mid-September and comes up in clear weather without warning. The Attic mainland gives the gulf partial shelter from it, like the neighbouring Argolic Gulf. A 40-year Mediterranean wave climatology finds the largest summer waves in the Aegean and Levantine basins, with values comparable to winter, produced by the etesian winds.

When is the Saronic Gulf roughest?

The meltemi blows periodically from about mid-May to mid-September and is at its strongest in the afternoon, though it often dies down at night. A 40-year Mediterranean wave climatology says the etesians reach their maximum intensity in summer, and it finds the stormy period from November to March across the basin. Aegean Flying Dolphins says it will call or text passengers when a ship is held back by adverse weather, if they gave a mobile number at ticketing.

What helps on this crossing

  • Check the wind for your day, not just the season. The etesians come up in clear weather without warning, and most inter-island ferries cannot sail when they blow hard.
  • Give the ticket agent a mobile number. Aegean Flying Dolphins says it will call or text if a ship is held back by adverse weather.
  • Sit midship on a low deck, keep your eyes on the horizon and put your phone away. The Aegina run is the shortest, 40 minutes with Hellenic Seaways.

For the full toolkit see the seasickness guide, or what to do once it has already started. For what the trials actually say about the oldest trick on that list, see the verdict on looking at the horizon. If the rocking follows you ashore afterwards, that is land sickness, which is normal, and it passes.
