Often, and badly in winter. Hecate Strait is wide but shallow, and the BC Ferries crossing to Haida Gwaii takes about 7 hours. Wikipedia, citing a 1992 marine weather hazards manual produced with Environment Canada, says winter storm swells commonly reach 8 to 10 m in the southern strait.

In the Nausea Index table of the 121 sea crossings we cover, the Hecate Strait is rated notorious, one of 6 in the top band. Full table: the roughest sea crossings, ranked.

Key facts

  • The Hecate Strait is a strait, and passenger reports place it in the very high roughness band.
  • The mechanism behind that reputation: Shallow strait, steep wind waves, southeast gales.
  • Conditions are reported roughest in January, November and December.
  • The calmest months are usually July and August.

Why is the Hecate Strait so rough?

Hecate Strait is about 140 km wide at its southern end, about 48 km wide in the north, and from 200 m deep in the south to 25 m deep east of Rose Spit. Wikipedia, citing a 1992 marine weather hazards manual, says the shallow water lets short, steep waves develop quickly, and lists frequent southeast gales. A 1985 wave study for Fisheries and Oceans Canada, based on buoy records from 1982 to 1984, found a maximum local fetch of 150 nautical miles, the complete length of the strait, and strong south to southeasterly winds in winter. At its Hecate Strait buoy, significant wave height was above 3 m in about 37 percent of the observations and above 5 m in about 8 percent from November to March.

When is the Hecate Strait roughest?

The 1985 wave study says strong south to southeasterly winds predominate in winter and weaker north to northwesterly winds in summer. In its 1982 to 1984 records the Hecate Strait buoy had a mean significant wave height of about 3.0 m in winter, 2.2 m in spring, 1.9 m in autumn and 1.1 m in summer, and the long-term records of the North and South Hecate Strait buoys from Fisheries and Oceans Canada show the same pattern, with the highest waves from November to February and the lowest from June to August. BC Ferries' route overview sets five round trips a week from July 1 to Labour Day and a minimum of two a week for the rest of the year.

What helps on this crossing

  • Choose summer if you can. In 1982 to 1984 the Hecate Strait buoy averaged about 1.1 m in summer against about 3.0 m in winter, and the BC Ferries route overview sets its most frequent sailings from July 1 to Labour Day.
  • Sit midship on a low deck for the whole 7 hours, keep your eyes on the horizon and put your phone away. Short, steep waves jolt more than they roll, so brace your feet and keep your head against a fixed headrest.
  • Check the marine forecast for southeast gales before you sail. Wikipedia, citing a marine weather hazards manual, lists frequent southeast gales on this strait, and the 1985 study found strong south to southeasterly winds in winter.

For the full toolkit see the seasickness guide, or what to do once it has already started. If the rocking follows you ashore afterwards, that is land sickness, which is normal, and it passes.
