Is the Bay of Fundy rough? What to expect on the crossing
Sometimes. The Saint John to Digby ferry crosses the bay in approximately 2 hours 15 minutes in peak season and 2 hours 30 minutes off season. Canada's Sailing Directions flag the strong tidal streams and prevalence of fogs, and say a south-west swell meeting the ebb at Digby Gut raises large waves.

Key facts
- The Bay of Fundy is a bay, and passenger reports place it in the moderate roughness band.
- The mechanism behind that reputation: Record tides, swell against the ebb at Digby Gut.
- Conditions are reported roughest in January.
- The calmest months are usually May, June, July, August and September.
Why does the Bay of Fundy get rough?
NOAA says the highest tides in the world are in the Bay of Fundy, and Canada's Sailing Directions say its strong tidal streams call for unremitting attention. Off Digby Gut the streams run parallel to the shore at up to about 2.5 knots, and the maximum flow in Digby Gut, where the Saint John ferry arrives, is about 5 knots. The same book says a south-west swell running into Digby Gut meets the ebb stream and raises large waves on the seaward side of Man of War Rock, strongest about 2.5 hours before low water. Outside the bay, the Jonesport buoy off the Maine coast records daily maximum waves averaging 2.67 m in January and 1.00 m in August.
When is the Bay of Fundy roughest?
The Fundy Rose sails daily through winter, apart from a few holidays, and its posted schedule runs to March 31, 2027. Canada's Sailing Directions say ice forms at the head of the bay as early as December and clears in late April, but Saint John Harbour is always ice-free. Outside the bay, the Jonesport buoy shows the roughest waves from December to March and the smallest from May to September.

The crossings that cross it
| Route | Typical duration | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Saint John to Digby (MV Fundy Rose) | 2 hours 15 minutes to 2 hours 30 minutes | Bay Ferries sails daily. The operator gives 2 hours 15 minutes in peak season and 2 hours 30 minutes off season. |
| Blacks Harbour to Grand Manan (Coastal Transport) | About 1.5 hours | Several daily sailings to Grand Manan Island, on the outer Bay of Fundy side. |
| Brier Island whale and seabird cruises (Westport, Nova Scotia) | 2.5 to 5 hours | Mega Nova cruises run in summer and early autumn and sail weather permitting. The operator's 2026 price list gives June 13 to September 30. |
What helps on this crossing
- Check swell and tide, not only the wind. Canada's Sailing Directions say a south-west swell meets the ebb in Digby Gut and raises large waves, strongest about 2.5 hours before low water.
- Allow for fog. The Sailing Directions say fog is frequent in the Bay of Fundy, particularly in spring and summer, so keep your eyes on the horizon when you can see it and put your phone away when you cannot.
- If your dates are flexible, travel between May and September, when the Jonesport buoy shows the smallest waves. The ferry also runs through winter, which is the roughest part of the year outside the bay.
For the full toolkit see the seasickness guide, or what to do once it has already started. For what the trials actually say about the oldest trick on that list, see the verdict on looking at the horizon. If the rocking follows you ashore afterwards, that is land sickness, which is normal, and it passes.
Frequently asked questions
Is the Bay of Fundy rough in July?
Usually not by wave height. At the Jonesport buoy outside the bay, the daily maximum wave height averages 1.13 m in July against 2.67 m in January. Fog is frequent in spring and summer, and a south-west swell can still meet the ebb at Digby Gut.
Is the Bay of Fundy rough in January?
January is the roughest month at the Jonesport buoy outside the bay, where on about half of January days the daily maximum tops 2.3 m. The Fundy Rose sails daily through winter, apart from a few holidays such as December 25 and January 1. Ice forms at the head of the bay as early as December, but Saint John Harbour is always ice-free.
Is the Bay of Fundy rough in October?
It starts to be. About 1 October day in 5 tops 2.3 m at the Jonesport buoy, against about 1 in 75 in July. The Brier Island whale cruises wind down in early autumn, and the Fundy Rose keeps sailing.
Do the huge tides make the Bay of Fundy rough?
They move a lot of water, and the streams run at up to about 2.5 knots off Digby Gut and about 5 knots in the Gut, with whirlpools and eddies near Man of War Rock. What makes the sea rough is a swell or wind that opposes the stream. The Sailing Directions report a heavy sea where wind opposes the tidal stream near Fort Folly Point, and large waves where a south-west swell meets the ebb at Digby Gut.
