Is the Chesapeake Bay rough? What to expect on the crossing
Usually small waves, but strong wind over the bay's long fetch can build real seas. NOAA's Coast Pilot says northerlies of 25 knots or more can easily build 8- to 10-foot seas in the central bay, and that from November through April the bay, particularly the southern portion, is rough sailing. At the Stingray Point buoy on the Virginia side, the daily maximum wave height averages between 0.57 and 0.71 m in every month.

Key facts
- The Chesapeake Bay is a bay, and passenger reports place it in the moderate roughness band.
- The mechanism behind that reputation: Shallow bay, long fetch, wind against tide.
Why does the Chesapeake Bay get rough?
Chesapeake Bay is about 200 miles long, up to 30 miles wide and averages only 21 feet deep, according to Wikipedia. NOAA's Coast Pilot says northerlies of 25 knots or more, over a long fetch of the bay, can easily build 8- to 10-foot seas in the central portion and 5- to 7-foot seas in the south. It adds that waves in strong winds can be rough and that bad chop develops when the winds oppose strong tidal currents. Seas of 8 feet or more occur about 2 to 4 percent of the time from fall through early spring.
When is the Chesapeake Bay roughest?
NOAA's Coast Pilot says that from November through April the bay, particularly the southern portion, is rough sailing, and that gales can occur from September through March. Thunderstorms are a bay-wide threat in spring and summer, developing about 6 to 9 days each month. The Smith Island day trips from Crisfield are seasonal and run Wednesdays through Sundays.

The crossing: 50 minutes to 2 hours each way
Roughest stretch: The open middle of the bay, away from the island shores
Stay low and near the middle of the boat. The long crossings are quiet in light wind and choppy when a strong wind builds over the open bay.

The crossings that cross it
| Route | Typical duration | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Reedville, Virginia to Tangier Island (Tangier Island Cruises) | 6 hours | The operator's day trip, which includes time on the island. It cancels for weather only if the captain fears for passenger safety. |
| Crisfield, Maryland to Smith Island (Smith Island Cruises) | About 50 minutes | Seasonal day trip, offered Wednesdays through Sundays, with about 2.5 hours on the island. |
| Point Lookout, Maryland to Smith Island (Smith Island Cruises) | About 2 hours each way | Crosses the bay from the western shore. Runs Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, with 2.5 hours on the island. |
What helps on this crossing
- Check the wind, not just the day. The Coast Pilot says bad chop develops when strong winds oppose strong tidal currents, and northerlies of 25 knots or more over a long fetch build the biggest seas.
- Know the operator's weather rule. Tangier Island Cruises says it cancels for weather only if the captain fears for the safety of the passengers, and that it usually notifies passengers the day before when bad weather is likely.
- Sit low and near the middle, watch the actual horizon line and put your phone away, especially on the 2 hour Point Lookout crossing.
For the full toolkit see the seasickness guide, or what to do once it has already started. For what the trials actually say about the oldest trick on that list, see the verdict on looking at the horizon. If the rocking follows you ashore afterwards, that is land sickness, which is normal, and it passes.
