In the Nausea Index table of the 121 sea crossings we cover, the Lake Huron is rated rough, one of 34 in that band, with 6 rated higher. Full table: the roughest sea crossings, ranked.

Key facts

  • The Lake Huron is a lake, and passenger reports place it in the high roughness band.
  • The mechanism behind that reputation: Open fetch, winds from any quarter.
  • Conditions are reported roughest in January, October, November and December.
  • The calmest months are usually May, June, July and August.

Why is the Lake Huron so rough?

Fetch and wind from every direction. Lake Huron is the second largest Great Lake, with a maximum recorded depth of 750 feet, and the Coast Pilot says its shape lets strong winds from any quarter generate rough seas somewhere on the lake. With enough fetch and duration, waves of 10 feet or more can build in open water once winds from any direction reach 20 knots. The Chi-Cheemaun crosses the Main Channel, which joins Georgian Bay to the rest of the lake.

When is the Lake Huron roughest?

The Coast Pilot says waves of 10 feet or more occur most often in October, November and December, and can be expected 4 to 7 percent of the time in the wide central part of the lake then. Thunderstorms are most frequent from April through October, with peak activity during June, July and August. Georgian Bay ice begins to form near the end of December and the area is clear by mid-April.
