Is the Block Island Sound rough? What to expect on the crossing
Sometimes, for a short hop. NOAA's Coast Pilot says the waters of Block Island Sound are open, similar to the nearby ocean, and that the sound can be as turbulent as any water off the coast. The Block Island Ferry takes 30 minutes on the high speed boat and 55 minutes on the traditional ferry from Point Judith.

Key facts
- The Block Island Sound is a sound, and passenger reports place it in the moderate roughness band.
- The mechanism behind that reputation: Open to the Atlantic, southerly fetch.
- Conditions are reported roughest in January, February, March, November and December.
- The calmest months are usually May, June, July, August and September.
Why does the Block Island Sound get rough?
Land influences the weather only at the northern edge of the sound, NOAA's Coast Pilot says, so winds from every other direction have ample time to increase in strength. Wind speeds can be double those on the coast in winter, when averages of 16 to 17 knots are common, and seas built by winds from the southeast through southwest are usually highest because no land interferes with the fetch. Gales occur up to 5 percent of the time in winter, most likely from the west and northwest, and seas of 10 feet (3 m) or more are likely 5 to 7 percent of the time. The tidal currents are strongest around The Race and in the entrances between Montauk Point, Block Island and Point Judith.
When is the Block Island Sound roughest?
Winter is the rough season: the Coast Pilot gives gales up to 5 percent of the time and seas of 10 feet (3 m) or more 5 to 7 percent of the time in winter. At Block Island the wind averages 15 knots for the year and 17 knots in winter, when gales are frequent, and in the early fall most of the tropical storms moving up the coast affect the island to some extent. The high speed ferry Athena runs from Memorial Day weekend through Columbus Day weekend, while the traditional ferry runs year-round.

The crossings that cross it
| Route | Typical duration | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Point Judith to Block Island, traditional ferry | 55 minutes | Run by Interstate Navigation as the Block Island Ferry. The traditional ferry sails year-round. |
| Point Judith to Block Island, high speed ferry | 30 minutes | The high speed ferry Athena runs from Memorial Day weekend through Columbus Day weekend. |
What helps on this crossing
- Check the marine forecast for wind from the southeast through southwest. The Coast Pilot says seas built from that quarter are usually highest in the sound, because no land interferes with the fetch.
- Outside the high speed season the traditional ferry is the Point Judith service, so winter crossings take 55 minutes and meet the roughest months. Easterly gales can make the sea too heavy to enter Old Harbor, the Coast Pilot says.
- Sit low and near the middle, watch the actual horizon line and put your phone away. The crossing is only 30 to 55 minutes.
For the full toolkit see the seasickness guide, or what to do once it has already started. For what the trials actually say about the oldest trick on that list, see the verdict on looking at the horizon. If the rocking follows you ashore afterwards, that is land sickness, which is normal, and it passes.
Frequently asked questions
Is Block Island Sound rough in July?
Usually not. At NOAA's Block Island wave buoy (44097), in open water south-east of the island, the daily maximum wave height averages 1.30 m in July against 2.56 m in January, and under 4 percent of July days top 2.35 m. Fog is the bigger summer issue: the Coast Pilot says summer fog occurs two to three times more often here than in Narragansett or Buzzard Bays.
Is Block Island Sound rough in January?
January is the roughest month at the buoy: the daily maximum wave height averages 2.56 m, and nearly half of January days top 2.35 m. The Coast Pilot says gales occur up to 5 percent of the time in winter and seas of 10 feet (3 m) or more are likely 5 to 7 percent of the time. In easterly gales the sea can be too heavy to enter Old Harbor.
Is Block Island Sound rough in September?
Calmer than winter, but not settled. About 1 September day in 7 tops 2.35 m at the buoy, against about 1 in 30 in July. The Coast Pilot says most of the tropical storms moving up the coast affect Block Island to some extent in the early fall.
How long is the Block Island Ferry?
From Point Judith the operator gives 55 minutes on the traditional ferry and 30 minutes on the high speed ferry. Its 2026 schedule also lists a 1 hour high speed sailing from Newport.
