Is the Gulf of Maine rough? What to expect on the crossing
Sometimes, and mostly outside the summer ferry season. NOAA's Coast Pilot says the Gulf of Maine has a bad reputation among mariners because of its changeable weather, frequent fogs and strong tidal currents. The CAT's 2026 season ran from May 14 to October 14, and the buoy record shows the smallest waves from May to September.

In the Nausea Index table of the 121 sea crossings we cover, the Gulf of Maine is rated rough, one of 34 in that band, with 6 rated higher. Full table: the roughest sea crossings, ranked.
Key facts
- The Gulf of Maine is a gulf, and passenger reports place it in the high roughness band.
- The mechanism behind that reputation: Open Atlantic gulf, winter gales on a long fetch.
- Conditions are reported roughest in January.
- The calmest months are usually May, June, July, August and September.
Why is the Gulf of Maine so rough?
The gulf is open to the Atlantic: NOAA's Coast Pilot says winter windspeeds of 15 knots or more persist for more than 12 hours about 70 to 80 percent of the time, and winds that blow for long over a long fetch generate rough seas. Rough seas are usually generated by gales out of the northwest through northeast, and waves greater than 10 feet (3 m) occur about 10 to 15 percent of the time in winter. Fast-growing storms off the mid-Atlantic coast can generate 30-foot waves in the gulf, and gales and rough seas are most likely from September through April. At NOAA's Jonesport buoy (station 44027), off the Maine coast east of Bar Harbor, the daily maximum wave height averages 2.67 m in January and 1.00 m in August.
When is the Gulf of Maine roughest?
NOAA's Coast Pilot says gales and rough seas are most likely from September through April, and from December through March gales occur about 6 to 12 percent of the time in the open gulf. Summer winds are usually out of the south through southwest, and gales are infrequent. Buoy records show waves are smallest from May to September, and the whale watch season runs from late May to early October.

The crossings that cross it
| Route | Typical duration | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Bar Harbor to Yarmouth, Nova Scotia (The CAT) | 3.5 hours | High-speed car ferry that sails both ways. The 2026 season ran from May 14 to October 14. |
| Bar Harbor whale watch (Bar Harbor Whale Watch Co.) | 3 to 5.5 hours | Goes 30 to 50 miles offshore into the open gulf. Runs from late May to early October. |
What helps on this crossing
- Check the forecast and offshore buoy reports the way the whale watch captains do. Bar Harbor Whale Watch Co. says trips will most likely cancel for high seas, thunderstorms or widespread dense fog.
- On the whale watch catamarans, the operator says the back of the boat and the main level feel less motion, and the higher levels and the front feel more.
- If your dates are flexible, go between June and September, when the buoy record shows the smallest waves. On board, watch the actual horizon line and keep your phone in your pocket.
For the full toolkit see the seasickness guide, or what to do once it has already started. For what the trials actually say about the oldest trick on that list, see the verdict on looking at the horizon. If the rocking follows you ashore afterwards, that is land sickness, which is normal, and it passes.
Frequently asked questions
Is the Gulf of Maine rough in July?
Usually not. July is one of the calmest months in the buoy record: at NOAA's Jonesport buoy the daily maximum wave height averages 1.13 m in July against 2.67 m in January. Only about 1 percent of July days top 2.3 m, and the Coast Pilot says summer winds are usually out of the south through southwest, with gales infrequent.
Is the Gulf of Maine rough in January?
Yes. January is the roughest month in the buoy record: on about half of January days the daily maximum wave height tops 2.3 m at the Jonesport buoy. The Coast Pilot says waves greater than 10 feet (3 m) occur about 10 to 15 percent of the time in winter, and the CAT's 2026 season ran only from May 14 to October 14.
Is the Gulf of Maine rough in October?
It starts to be. About 1 October day in 5 tops 2.3 m at the Jonesport buoy, against about 1 in 75 in July. The Coast Pilot says gales and rough seas are most likely from September through April, and the CAT's 2026 season ended on October 14.
Do Bar Harbor whale watches cancel for rough seas?
Yes. Bar Harbor Whale Watch Co. says trips will most likely cancel for high seas conditions in the forecast or occurring offshore up to an hour before departure. It says the decision can be made up to 30 minutes before departure, and that it refunds trips it cancels for weather.
