Is the Northumberland Strait rough? What to expect on the crossing
Usually a short, shallow crossing, but not a sheltered one. The Wood Islands to Caribou ferry takes 75 minutes across a strait that varies from 17 to 65 metres deep, and Canada's Sailing Directions call the Prince Edward Island coast beside the Wood Islands terminal a very exposed stretch. The ferry runs only from May to December, and depressions become more frequent in the Gulf with the approach of autumn.

Key facts
- The Northumberland Strait is a strait, and passenger reports place it in the moderate roughness band.
- The mechanism behind that reputation: Shallow, exposed strait, autumn depressions.
Why does the Northumberland Strait get rough?
The strait is shallow: Wikipedia puts its depth between 17 and 65 metres, with the deepest water at either end, and Canada's Sailing Directions put its length at about 160 miles. The same Sailing Directions call the south coast of Prince Edward Island from Cape Bear to Wood Islands, where the ferry docks, a very exposed stretch of coast. For the wider Gulf of Saint Lawrence, they say settled summer days generally hold light winds, and that with the approach of autumn there is an increase in the frequency of depressions.
When is the Northumberland Strait roughest?
Canada's Sailing Directions say the Wood Islands to Caribou ferries operate between May and December. The operator's 2026 schedule shows eight sailings each way daily from June 15 to October 17, then four each way from October 18 to December 20. Ice formation in the Gulf of Saint Lawrence commences in the first half of December and clears in mid-April, and Wikipedia says sea ice covers the entire strait between December and April.

What helps on this crossing
- Check the sailing status on the day. Northumberland Ferries offers sailing alerts for schedule changes, and the 2026 schedule is shorter from October 18.
- If your dates are flexible, choose a summer sailing. Canada's Sailing Directions say settled summer days in the Gulf generally hold light winds, and that depressions become more frequent from autumn.
- Sit low and near the middle, watch the actual horizon line and put your phone away. The crossing is only 75 minutes.
For the full toolkit see the seasickness guide, or what to do once it has already started. For what the trials actually say about the oldest trick on that list, see the verdict on looking at the horizon. If the rocking follows you ashore afterwards, that is land sickness, which is normal, and it passes.
