Is the Bering Sea rough? What to expect on the crossing

Often, and badly in winter. The NOAA Coast Pilot calls the northern Gulf of Alaska and the southern Bering Sea among the most treacherous winter waters in the Northern Hemisphere, and satellite radar measurements find the roughest seas most commonly from November to February. The same pilot says seas of 20 feet or more are unlikely from May through August.

Aleutian Low storms over a wide deep basin

In the Nausea Index table of the 121 sea crossings we cover, the Bering Sea is rated notorious, one of 6 in the top band. Full table: the roughest sea crossings, ranked.

Key facts

  • The Bering Sea is a sea, and passenger reports place it in the very high roughness band.
  • The mechanism behind that reputation: Aleutian Low storms over a wide deep basin.
  • Conditions are reported roughest in January, February, October, November and December.
  • The calmest months are usually June and July.
  • It is also known as Beringovo more.

Why is the Bering Sea so rough?

The Bering Sea covers over 2,000,000 square km, and its deep water basin rises through a narrow slope into shallower water above the continental shelves. The NOAA Coast Pilot says the Aleutian Low sends storms through the area, on average three or four a month, and that early winter storms are often intense and more likely to reach the Bering Sea. That makes the early part of winter the roughest part of a rough season in the southern Bering Sea, the pilot says. In severe cases, which it puts at about once every five years, significant wave heights can climb to 40 to 50 feet (12 to 15 m) along the Aleutians and 30 to 40 feet (9 to 12 m) in Bristol Bay.

When is the Bering Sea roughest?

The NOAA Coast Pilot says gales are most likely in November and December and that wave heights climb to 10 feet (3 m) or more throughout the winter. It says gales are least likely in June, July and August and that seas of 20 feet or more are unlikely from May through August, but that September weather is often a harbinger of winter, with waves of 10 feet or more up to 20 percent of the time. Satellite radar measurements put the median significant wave height in September at 1.5 to 2.4 m, and a NOAA buoy in the south-east Bering Sea records its roughest months from October to February and its calmest in June and July.

RouteTypical durationWhat to know
Nome to Dutch Harbor (HX expedition cruise)about 5 daysListed for September 2027: the cruise begins at Nome on day 2 and reaches Dutch Harbor on day 7, with two exploration days and two sea days between. The captain picks the exploration stops from the conditions at the time.
Akutan to Dutch Harbor (Alaska Marine Highway)3 hours 30 minutesA leg of the Southwest route. Both harbours lie on inlets that open into the Bering Sea. The ferry system says weather restrictions rule out winter service to communities in this region other than Kodiak, Ouzinkie and Port Lions.
False Pass to Akutan (Alaska Marine Highway)10 hours 30 minutesA leg of the Southwest route to Dutch Harbor. Service is limited to the milder months.

What helps on this crossing

  • Sail in summer. The NOAA Coast Pilot says seas of 20 feet or more are unlikely from May through August and gales are least likely in June, July and August.
  • On the sea days, take a low cabin near the middle of the ship and lie flat when the swell builds. The expedition captain picks the exploration stops from the conditions at the time, so expect the plan to change.
  • Watch the horizon from a low midship lounge and leave your phone alone on the sea days. Fog is most common in June, July and August, so a clear horizon is not certain.

For the full toolkit see the seasickness guide, or what to do once it has already started. For what the trials actually say about the oldest trick on that list, see the verdict on looking at the horizon. If the rocking follows you ashore afterwards, that is land sickness, which is normal, and it passes.
