Is the Ligurian Sea rough? What to expect on the crossing

Sometimes, and mostly in winter. The Ligurian Sea is deep open water between the Italian Riviera and Corsica, and the Genoa ferries to Corsica and Sardinia cross it. A 40-year Mediterranean wave climatology finds November to March the stormy period and June to August the calm one.

Mistral and Gulf of Genoa lows over deep water

In the Nausea Index table of the 121 sea crossings we cover, the Ligurian Sea is rated manageable, one of 81 in that band, with 40 rated higher. Full table: the roughest sea crossings, ranked.

Key facts

  • The Ligurian Sea is a sea, and passenger reports place it in the moderate roughness band.
  • The mechanism behind that reputation: Mistral and Gulf of Genoa lows over deep water.
  • Conditions are reported roughest in January, February, March, November and December.
  • The calmest months are usually June, July and August.
  • It is also known as Mar Ligure / Mer Ligurienne.

Why does the Ligurian Sea get rough?

The Ligurian Sea reaches a depth of more than 2,800 m northwest of Corsica, and the Gulf of Genoa at its northern end is about 145 km wide. The EUMeTrain weather course says the effects of gale-force mistral can extend into the western and central Mediterranean and create high sea states throughout the entire region. It adds that gale-force mistral often develops when cyclogenesis, the birth of a low, occurs over the Gulf of Genoa.

When is the Ligurian Sea roughest?

A 40-year Mediterranean wave climatology finds the stormy period from November to March, with the highest monthly wave height in January, and the calm period from June to August. April and May and September and October are transitional, and the same climatology says the pattern still holds for the northern and western parts of the sea. Moby lists its Genoa to Bastia sailings from 15 May to 27 September 2027, which puts those crossings in the calmer part of the year.

The crossings that cross it

RouteTypical durationWhat to know
Genoa to Bastia (Moby)about 5 to 5.5 hoursA daytime crossing to Corsica. Moby lists sailings from 15 May to 27 September 2027.
Genoa to Olbia (Moby)about 10.5 to 13 hoursAn overnight crossing to Sardinia. The Ligurian Sea is the first part of the passage. Moby lists sailings from 7 May to 2 November 2026 and from 13 May to 30 September 2027.

What helps on this crossing

  • Pick a daytime crossing in the calm months if you can. Moby lists Genoa to Bastia as a daytime crossing of 5 to 5.5 hours, and the wave climatology finds June to August the calmest period.
  • On the overnight Genoa to Olbia sailing, which Moby lists at 10.5 to 13 hours, book a cabin low in the ship and near the middle, and lie flat.
  • Keep your eyes on the horizon on the open stretch and leave your phone alone. Check the marine forecast for mistral before you go, since gale-force mistral often develops when a low forms over the Gulf of Genoa.

If the rocking follows you ashore afterwards, that is land sickness, which is normal, and it passes.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Ligurian Sea rough in July?

July is in the calm period. The wave climatology puts June to August within a few percent of the minimum wave height. EUMeTrain still says gale-force mistral can occur year-round.

Is the Ligurian Sea rough in January?

January is the roughest month. The wave climatology puts the highest monthly wave height in January and counts November to March as the stormy period. Moby's published dates for its Genoa to Bastia and Genoa to Olbia sailings fall between early May and early November, so a January crossing needs a different route.

What makes the Ligurian Sea rough?

Mainly winter lows and the mistral. The EUMeTrain course says gale-force mistral often develops when a low forms over the Gulf of Genoa, and that its effects can build high sea states across the western and central Mediterranean. The sea is also deep, more than 2,800 m at its deepest.

How long is the ferry from Genoa to Corsica?

Moby lists Genoa to Bastia at 5 to 5.5 hours as a daytime crossing, with sailings from 15 May to 27 September 2027. Its Genoa to Olbia night crossing to Sardinia is listed at 10.5 to 13 hours.
