Key facts

  • The Strait of Bonifacio is a strait, and passenger reports place it in the high roughness band.
  • The mechanism behind that reputation: Mistral squeezed through an 11 km gap.
  • Conditions are reported roughest in January, February and March.
  • The calmest months are usually June, July and August.
  • It is also known as Bocche di Bonifacio.

Why is the Strait of Bonifacio so rough?

The strait is 11 km wide at its narrowest, no more than 100 m deep, and divides the Tyrrhenian Sea from the western Mediterranean. The EUMeTrain weather course says gale-force mistral can create high sea states across the western and central Mediterranean, especially when it blows through the Strait of Bonifacio between Corsica and Sardinia. The Sea of Sardinia lies just west of the strait. A 40-year Mediterranean wave climatology says the western basin has the largest typical waves of any basin in every season except summer, particularly the Sardinian Sea, where the mistral blows persistently.

When is the Strait of Bonifacio roughest?

EUMeTrain says the mistral is most common in winter and in spring, with the strongest episodes between those two seasons, and that gale-force events can occur year-round. A 40-year Mediterranean wave climatology finds the stormy period from November to March, with January the peak, and the calm period from June to August. EUMeTrain adds that most mistrals last one to three days.

What helps on this crossing

  • Sit midship on a low deck and keep your eyes on the horizon. The crossing is about 50 minutes, so the rough part is short.
  • Look at the mistral forecast before you book. EUMeTrain says most mistrals last one to three days, so moving the crossing by a day or two can change the sea you get.
  • Put your phone away and breathe slowly through the mid-strait stretch, where the mistral blows through the gap between the two islands.

If the rocking follows you ashore afterwards, that is land sickness, which is normal, and it passes.
