Is the German Bight rough? What to expect on the crossing

Often, especially from October to February. The German Bight is the open south-eastern corner of the North Sea, and the BSH wave stations around Heligoland sit in only 20 to 30 m of water. FRS lists its Halunder Jet timetable from 19 March to 1 November in 2026, and says the ride is comfortable even in rough sea.

In the Nausea Index table of the 121 sea crossings we cover, the German Bight is rated rough, one of 34 in that band, with 6 rated higher. Full table: the roughest sea crossings, ranked.

Key facts

  • The German Bight is a bight, and passenger reports place it in the high roughness band.
  • The mechanism behind that reputation: Shallow open bight with tidal channels.
  • Conditions are reported roughest in January, February and December.
  • The calmest months are usually May, June, July and August.
  • It is also known as Deutsche Bucht.

Why is the German Bight so rough?

The German Bight is the south-eastern bight of the North Sea, bounded by the Netherlands and Germany to the south and Denmark and Germany to the east, and limited to the north and west by the Dogger Bank. It is shallow: the BSH wave stations at Heligoland and the Elbe sit in 20 to 30 m of water, and the Westerland station sits in 13 m. FRS says its arrival and departure times can shift by up to 15 minutes because of weather conditions, tides and navigation-related obstacles. Heligoland lies approximately 69 km by sea from Cuxhaven at the mouth of the Elbe.

When is the German Bight roughest?

FRS publishes its Halunder Jet timetable from 19 March to 1 November in 2026 and counts down to the end of the season on 1 November. Modelled wave data (ERA5 reanalysis) for the Heligoland area puts the highest months from October to February, with an average daily maximum of about 2.2 m in January, and the lowest from May to August, at about 1.1 to 1.3 m. That leaves the December to February peak outside the Halunder Jet season.

What helps on this crossing

  • Pick the summer window if you can. FRS lists the Halunder Jet from 19 March to 1 November in 2026, and modelled wave data puts May to August lowest.
  • If you are prone to motion sickness, sail from Cuxhaven. The open-sea leg takes about 1h15 from there, against up to 4h15 from Hamburg, which calls at Brunsbüttel and Cuxhaven first.
  • Reserve a seat near the middle of the boat when you book. FRS assigns reserved seats, and the Halunder Jet carries a motion damping system.

For the full toolkit see the seasickness guide, or what to do once it has already started. For what the trials actually say about the oldest trick on that list, see the verdict on looking at the horizon. If the rocking follows you ashore afterwards, that is land sickness, which is normal, and it passes.
