Why is the Vestfjorden so rough?
Wikipedia says Vestfjorden is a 155 km long fjord or oceanic sea that could best be described as a firth or an open bight of sea, and that its mouth is about 80 km wide, running from Bodø to the islands of Røstlandet and Værøya. At the Lofoten end, Moskstraumen, one of the strongest systems of tidal eddies and whirlpools in the world, forms in the open sea between the Norwegian Sea and the Vestfjorden. Wikipedia puts it down to strong semi-diurnal tides and a shallow ridge between Moskenesøya and Værøya that amplifies and whirls the tidal currents.
When is the Vestfjorden roughest?
Modelled wave data (ERA5 reanalysis) for the middle of the fjord puts December to March highest, with an average daily maximum of about 2.7 m in January and February, and July lowest at about 1.0 m. Torghatten Nord runs a summer timetable until 6 September 2026 and a different winter timetable from 7 September. Torghatten also says the routes see very high traffic in peak seasons, and recommends the direct Bodø to Moskenes sailings.

If the rocking follows you ashore afterwards, that is land sickness, which is normal, and it passes.
