Key facts

  • The ʻAlalākeiki Channel is a channel, and passenger reports place it in the moderate roughness band.
  • The mechanism behind that reputation: Afternoon trade winds and strong currents.

Why does the ʻAlalākeiki Channel get rough?

The channel separates Kahoʻolawe and Maui at a distance of 7 miles, and Molokini sits about 3 miles off Maui's southwestern coast. Wikipedia says Lahaina Roads, up the coast, is most vulnerable to winds and waves from the south in the long open fetch between southern Maui and Kahoʻolawe, as during a Kona storm. That open water is this channel. Wind builds through the day: Pride of Maui says it can add surface chop and build stronger currents as the morning goes on, and Hawaii's Division of Aquatic Resources says currents outside the Molokini cove can be strong and may intensify inside it during afternoon winds.

When is the ʻAlalākeiki Channel roughest?

NWS Honolulu says the trade winds blow about 90% of the time in June, July and August and about 50% of the time in winter. Most years, especially in March through early April, some of the trades blow at 30 mph and higher for a few days at a time. Four Winds says Molokini is great year-round, with the best conditions usually in the morning when the waters are calm and the winds are low.

RouteTypical durationWhat to know
Māʻalaea to Molokini (Four Winds morning snorkel)5 hour tripMolokini is about 3 miles offshore. Four Winds picks the snorkel site on the day, with Molokini first when weather and ocean conditions permit.
Kīhei Boat Ramp to Molokini (Redline Rafting)15-minute ride, 2 hour tripA raft trip. Redline Rafting says the ride is fast and can be very wet and bumpy.
Māʻalaea to Molokini (Maui Magic)5 hour tripFour Winds' sister boat. The plan is Molokini Crater plus a second stop at the captain's discretion, and all sites are weather dependent.

What helps on this crossing

  • Book a morning trip. Four Winds says the best conditions at Molokini are usually in the morning, when the waters are calm and the winds are low.
  • Ask about the boat type before you book. Redline Rafting says its raft ride is fast and can be very wet and bumpy, and its FAQ says everyone reacts differently to boat motion.
  • Once inside the crater, look at the horizon and rest. Wikipedia says the crescent shape protects the inside from waves and the channel's powerful currents.

For the full toolkit see the seasickness guide, or what to do once it has already started. For what the trials actually say about the oldest trick on that list, see the verdict on looking at the horizon. If the rocking follows you ashore afterwards, that is land sickness, which is normal, and it passes.
