Is the ʻAuʻau Channel rough? What to expect on the crossing

Usually not, by Hawaii standards. Wikipedia calls the ʻAuʻau Channel one of the most protected areas of ocean in the Hawaiian Islands. It is not flat, though: gusts off West Maui and storms from the south can raise a short, sharp chop.

Key facts

  • The ʻAuʻau Channel is a channel, and passenger reports place it in the moderate roughness band.
  • The mechanism behind that reputation: Island-sheltered channel with offshore gusts.

Why does the ʻAuʻau Channel get rough?

The channel lies between Maui and Lānaʻi, and Molokaʻi to the north and Kahoʻolawe to the south add more protection. Off Lahaina, the anchorage called Lahaina Roads sits in the lee of the West Maui Mountains and is shielded from the trade winds, but it still sees frequent heavy gusts and short sharp chop from thermally induced gusts driven offshore. The same anchorage is most vulnerable to winds and waves from the south, across the long open fetch between southern Maui and Kahoʻolawe, as during a Kona storm.

When is the ʻAuʻau Channel roughest?

NWS Honolulu says the trade winds blow about 90% of the time in June, July and August and about 50% of the time in winter, when storm systems and cold fronts make the weather more unsettled. On the Lahaina side the channel is shielded from the trades but open to the south, where a Kona storm can push wind and waves in. Expeditions lists whale season as December 15 through May 15, and Four Winds says December through April.

Whale watch sail from Lāhainā Harbor (PacWhale)2 hoursPacWhale lists its Sunset Cocktail and Whale Watch Sail from Lāhainā Harbor and Ma'alaea Harbor, with a 2 hour length. The listing says it begins November 15.
Whale watch and snorkel from Māʻalaea (Four Winds)3.5 hoursSeasonal, December to April. On its afternoon snorkel page, Four Winds says high cliffs shelter Coral Gardens from the afternoon trade winds.

What helps on this crossing

  • Take the first sailing. Four Winds says ocean conditions on Maui are usually calmest in the morning, and the Māʻalaea to Mānele schedule starts at 6:30am.
  • In whale season, look out at the horizon or the whales rather than at a screen. Expeditions says winter crossings share the water with humpback whales.
  • Sit low and near the middle of the boat, where the motion from gusts and chop is smallest.

For the full toolkit see the seasickness guide, or what to do once it has already started. For what the trials actually say about the oldest trick on that list, see the verdict on looking at the horizon. If the rocking follows you ashore afterwards, that is land sickness, which is normal, and it passes.

Frequently asked questions

Is the ʻAuʻau Channel rough?

Usually less so than other Hawaiian channels. Wikipedia lists it as one of the most protected areas of ocean in the islands, and says its name refers to calm, bath-like conditions. Gusts off West Maui and storms from the south can still raise a short, sharp chop, so it is not always flat.

Is the ʻAuʻau Channel rough in July?

July sits in the trade wind season. NWS Honolulu says the trades blow about 90% of the time in June, July and August, and calls summer the peak of the south shore surf season. The channel is shielded from the trades on the Lahaina side but open to waves from the south, and Four Winds says ocean conditions are usually calmest in the morning.

Is the ʻAuʻau Channel rough in January?

January falls in Hawaii's unsettled season. NWS Honolulu says the trades blow about 50% of the time in winter, and that winter storm systems bring frequent large surf to the north and west sides of most islands. Wikipedia says Molokaʻi protects the ʻAuʻau Channel to the north, and the south is its open side.

When is whale season in the ʻAuʻau Channel?

Expeditions, the Lānaʻi ferry, lists whale season as December 15 through May 15. Four Winds, a Māʻalaea boat operator, says December through April. PacWhale calls the channel one of the best whale-watching destinations in the world.
