Why does the Hauraki Gulf get rough?

A protected gulf with a windy spring. The gulf covers about 4,000 square kilometres and is shielded to the north by Great Barrier and Little Barrier islands and to the east by the 80 km long Coromandel Peninsula. Its name, Hauraki, is Mฤori for north wind. NIWA says spring is generally the windiest season around Auckland, and gale-force winds are most frequent in winter.

What helps on this crossing

  • Spring, September to November, is the windiest season, so choose summer or autumn if you can. Auckland Airport's mean wind is 21 km/h in October and November, against 15 km/h in April.
  • Check the operator's travel alerts before you go. SeaLink says weather can shift quickly on the Hauraki Gulf, and the ferry will not depart if the skipper and marine operations manager decide it is not safe to sail.
  • The Waiheke and Rangitoto runs are short, so keep your eyes on the horizon and put your phone away. On the 4.5 to 5 hour Great Barrier run, sit low and near the middle and keep your gaze on the horizon rather than a screen.

For the full toolkit see the seasickness guide, or what to do once it has already started. For what the trials actually say about the oldest trick on that list, see the verdict on looking at the horizon. If the rocking follows you ashore afterwards, that is land sickness, which is normal, and it passes.
