Is the Pearl River Estuary rough? What to expect on the crossing

Usually not. The Hong Kong to Macau crossing takes about 60 minutes over shallow estuary water, and the western part of the estuary is only 2 to 5 m deep. The rougher days come with the winter northeast monsoon and with typhoons from May to October, when TurboJET suspends sailings at Typhoon Signal 8.

Shallow estuary, monsoon wind and typhoons

In the Nausea Index table of the 121 sea crossings we cover, the Pearl River Estuary is rated manageable, one of 81 in that band, with 40 rated higher. Full table: the roughest sea crossings, ranked.

Key facts

  • The Pearl River Estuary is a estuary, and passenger reports place it in the moderate roughness band.
  • The mechanism behind that reputation: Shallow estuary, monsoon wind and typhoons.
  • Conditions are reported roughest in January, February, August, September and December.
  • The calmest months are usually March, April and May.

Why does the Pearl River Estuary get rough?

Open water, little depth. The estuary is bell-shaped, about 5 km wide at its head and about 60 km wide at the southern end. The northeast monsoon dominates from October to April. Hong Kong's Strong Monsoon Signal goes up when monsoon winds exceed 40 km/h near sea level, and the Observatory warns that rough seas and swells may affect the coast. Typhoons add a second source of rough water.

When is the Pearl River Estuary roughest?

Winter brings the northeast monsoon, and the Hong Kong Observatory's Strong Monsoon Signal statistics cover December, January and February, with northerly surges early in the season and easterly surges towards its end. Typhoon season runs from May to October and peaks in August, which averages 0.80 days a year at Signal 8 or higher. Spring is the quiet stretch, because strong monsoon surges drop off quickly and typhoons are rare.

What helps on this crossing

  • Check the Hong Kong Observatory before you go. It issues the Strong Monsoon Signal for monsoon winds above 40 km/h, and TurboJET suspends all ferries at Typhoon Signal 8. If a typhoon disrupts your sailing, TurboJET lets affected passengers reschedule free of charge.
  • The crossing takes about 60 minutes, so any rough stretch is short. Face forward, keep your eyes on the horizon and put your phone away.
  • If your dates are flexible, March to May has the fewest strong-wind days. Winter and the August to September typhoon peak are the months to avoid.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Pearl River Estuary rough in August?

August is the peak of typhoon season. The Observatory's 1991 to 2020 averages put 0.80 days a year at Signal 8 or higher in August, the most of any month. TurboJET suspends all ferry services once Signal 8 is issued in either Hong Kong or Macao, and adjusts the schedule to the actual weather.

Is the Hong Kong to Macau ferry rough in January?

It can be. January sits inside the northeast monsoon, when the Observatory issues the Strong Monsoon Signal for winds above 40 km/h near sea level. The signal warns that rough seas and swells may affect the coast. A calm day is still common, so check the forecast the day before.

Which months are calmest for the Macau ferry?

March, April and May. The Observatory says the number of northeast monsoon surges drops quickly in spring, and May averages only 0.03 days a year at Signal 8 or higher. Typhoon Signal 8 is far more likely from July to September.

Do the Macau ferries run in a typhoon?

Not once Typhoon Signal 8 is issued in Hong Kong or Macao. TurboJET then suspends all ferry services, and passengers affected by the typhoon can reschedule free of charge. Around the time a signal is raised, it has run a limited service on the Outer Harbour route.
