Open to the north-west, winter storm waves

In the Nausea Index table of the 121 sea crossings we cover, the Table Bay is rated manageable, one of 81 in that band, with 40 rated higher. Full table: the roughest sea crossings, ranked.

Key facts

  • The Table Bay is a bay, and passenger reports place it in the moderate roughness band.
  • The mechanism behind that reputation: Open to the north-west, winter storm waves.
  • Conditions are reported roughest in June, July and August.
  • The calmest months are usually April and May.
  • It is also known as Tafelbaai.

Why does the Table Bay get rough?

Exposure. Table Bay covers about 100 square kilometres and reaches 35 m at the centre of its mouth, and it is a poor natural harbour exposed to north-westerly storm waves. Deep-sea waves approach from the south-west to the north-west, and the south-westerly ones are reduced by refraction, so conditions vary across the bay. Spring and summer bring a strong south-easter, and winter cold fronts bring strong north-westerly winds.

When is the Table Bay roughest?

Winter, June to September on Wikipedia's dating, is the rough season: cold fronts arrive from the Atlantic with strong north-westerly winds, and winter north-westerlies can be far stronger than the summer south-easter. The south-easter, the Cape Doctor, is dated to September through March. April and May fall between the two.

The crossings that cross it

RouteTypical durationWhat to know
V&A Waterfront to Robben Island (Robben Island Museum ferry)30 to 60 minutes each wayThe Krotoa takes about half an hour. Other boats take longer, up to an hour. The island is 11 km from Cape Town.
Sunset cruise from the V&A Waterfront (Waterfront Charters)90 minutesOn the sailboats, the route follows the wind: across Table Bay in a summer south-easter, along the Clifton or Robben Island coast in a winter north-wester.
Coastal catamaran cruise from the V&A Waterfront (Waterfront Charters)60 minutesGoes to Green Point Lighthouse and back. In poor conditions the boat cruises the harbour instead.

What helps on this crossing

  • June to August is the roughest stretch in the table, so book another month if you can. The museum runs tours weather permitting and refunds tickets when adverse weather cancels them, so check the forecast the day before.
  • Ask which boat you are on. The Krotoa takes about half an hour each way, and other boats take between 30 minutes and an hour.
  • On a Waterfront Charters cruise, the boat heads for the harbour instead of the open bay when the seas run too high. On any boat, keep your eyes on the horizon and put your phone away.

For the full toolkit see the seasickness guide, or what to do once it has already started. For what the trials actually say about the oldest trick on that list, see the verdict on looking at the horizon. If the rocking follows you ashore afterwards, that is land sickness, which is normal, and it passes.

Frequently asked questions

Is Table Bay rough in July?

July is mid-winter, the roughest season. Table Bay is exposed to north-westerly storm waves, and winter cold fronts bring strong north-westerly winds. Robben Island Museum runs tours weather permitting and refunds tickets cancelled for adverse weather.

Is Table Bay rough in January?

January is summer, when the typical Cape Town wind blows from the south-east. That wind can be strong, and Waterfront Charters sends its cruises into the harbour when the sea runs too high or the wind is unpleasantly strong.

Which months are calmest for the Robben Island ferry?

April and May look like the gap. The south-easterly season is dated to March, and the winter cold fronts to June. No source ranks the months with wave data, so check the forecast the day before.

Does the Robben Island ferry make people seasick?

It can. The museum's own FAQ has an entry for visitors who are prone to seasickness, and the crossing takes 30 to 60 minutes depending on the boat. On any boat, sitting low and near the middle and watching the horizon helps.
