Is the Zanzibar Channel rough? What to expect on the crossing
Sometimes. The Zanzibar Channel is up to 37 km wide and open to the Indian Ocean, and the southeast monsoon, April to September, brings the stronger winds. Ferries are suspended in poor weather on the advice of the Zanzibar Maritime Authority.

Key facts
- The Zanzibar Channel is a channel, and passenger reports place it in the moderate roughness band.
- The mechanism behind that reputation: Open Indian Ocean channel, monsoon winds.
- Conditions are reported roughest in June and July.
- The calmest months are usually January, February, March, April, October, November and December.
Why does the Zanzibar Channel get rough?
Open water and monsoon wind. The channel separates Unguja from the mainland, is up to 37 km wide, and runs from a few dozen metres deep in the centre to a few hundred metres deep to the north and south. The southeast monsoon, Kusi, lasts from April to September with stronger winds, and June and July are the windiest months. The northeast monsoon is weaker, but a January 2026 alert still cited forecasts of winds up to 40 km/h and waves up to two metres.
When is the Zanzibar Channel roughest?
The southeast monsoon, Kusi, runs from April to September, and June and July are the windiest months. The northeast monsoon, Kaskazi, runs from November to February with weaker winds, and March, April and the October to November change-over are the calmest periods. Suspensions follow poor weather rather than the calendar: operators stop sailing when the Zanzibar Maritime Authority advises it and resume once conditions settle.

What helps on this crossing
- If you can choose, sail in March, April, October or November. The Tanzanian coastal chapter calls the March to April and October to November change-overs the calmest periods, and June and July the windiest months.
- Check for suspensions before you travel. Operators cancel sailings when the Zanzibar Maritime Authority advises poor weather, and they announce it on social media.
- The open middle of the channel is where you feel it. Keep your eyes on the horizon through that stretch and put your phone away.
For the full toolkit see the seasickness guide, or what to do once it has already started. For what the trials actually say about the oldest trick on that list, see the verdict on looking at the horizon. If the rocking follows you ashore afterwards, that is land sickness, which is normal, and it passes.
