Is the Ha Long Bay rough? What to expect on the crossing
Rarely. The Ha Long Bay Management Board puts the average wave at about 0.5 m because many islands shield the water, with waves up to 2.5 m on stormy days. The real risk is a summer storm, when authorities suspend overnight permits and send boats back to port.

Island-shielded bay, storm-season closures
In the Nausea Index table of the 121 sea crossings we cover, the Ha Long Bay is rated manageable, one of 81 in that band, with 40 rated higher. Full table: the roughest sea crossings, ranked.
Key facts
- The Ha Long Bay is a bay, and passenger reports place it in the moderate roughness band.
- The mechanism behind that reputation: Island-shielded bay, storm-season closures.
- The calmest months are usually January, February, March, April, May, October, November and December.
- It is also known as Vแปnh Hแบก Long.
Why does the Ha Long Bay get rough?
Shelter and shallow water. The bay covers about 1,553 square kilometres and holds 1,969 islets, and the Management Board says that shielding keeps average waves near 0.5 m. The floor is flat, averaging 5 to 10 m deep, with channels of 15 to 29 m. Stormy days are the exception, with waves up to 2.5 m, and tides add current: the tidal amplitude runs from 1.9 m to 4.6 m.
When is the Ha Long Bay roughest?
Storms are the main risk. The northern coast takes most direct landfalls in the early tropical storm season, June to August, and tropical cyclone numbers over the East Vietnam Sea peak in September. When one approaches, authorities suspend overnight permits and order boats back, as they did ahead of Storm Wutip in June 2025.

What helps on this crossing
- If you can choose, sail in April, May or October. They sit outside the June to August storm season for the northern coast.
- From June to September, book a cruise you can move or refund. Authorities suspend overnight permits when a storm approaches, as they did ahead of Storm Wutip.
- Inside the bay the average wave is about 0.5 m. Keep your eyes on the horizon or the nearest island and put your phone away, especially on the 30-minute speedboat transfer to Cat Ba.
For the full toolkit see the seasickness guide, or what to do once it has already started. If the rocking follows you ashore afterwards, that is land sickness, which is normal, and it passes.
Frequently asked questions
Is Ha Long Bay rough in July?
Usually not, but July sits in the early storm season. The Management Board puts the average wave near 0.5 m and up to 2.5 m on stormy days. When a storm approaches, overnight permits are suspended and boats return to the mainland, so the risk is a cancelled cruise more than a rough one.
Is Ha Long Bay rough in January?
The Management Board's average wave of about 0.5 m is not split by season, and the bay's islands shield its inner waters. January falls in the winter season, which the Board dates from November to March. In the open Gulf of Tonkin a long-term hindcast finds bigger waves in the northeast monsoon, so the outer waters are the rougher ones.
Which month is calmest for a Ha Long Bay cruise?
April, May and October. They fall outside the June to August storm season for the northern coast. The Management Board calls April the spring and October the autumn transitional season.
Do Ha Long Bay cruises get cancelled?
In storms, yes. Ahead of Storm Wutip in June 2025, overnight permits were suspended and tourist boats had to return passengers to the mainland before 6:00 PM. The dispatch came from the Inland Waterway Port Authority, under a directive from the standing office of the Quang Ninh provincial steering committee for natural disaster prevention.
