Winter gales over shoal-filled water

In the Nausea Index table of the 121 sea crossings we cover, the Nantucket Sound is rated manageable, one of 81 in that band, with 40 rated higher. Full table: the roughest sea crossings, ranked.

Key facts

  • The Nantucket Sound is a sound, and passenger reports place it in the moderate roughness band.
  • The mechanism behind that reputation: Winter gales over shoal-filled water.
  • The calmest months are usually May, June, July, August and September.

Why does the Nantucket Sound get rough?

The sound is shallow: the seabed varies from under 5 feet to 85 feet, with numerous shoals at the eastern entrance and inside. It is about 23 miles long east to west and 6 to 22 miles wide, and gales come about 3 to 6 percent of the time from October through March, frequently out of the west and northwest. For open waters nearby, the Coast Pilot puts waves of 12 feet or more at 5 to 15 percent of the time from November through February; in the shallow parts of the sound those frequencies drop, but waves may break before reaching these heights. Tide adds to it at West Chop, off the north corner of Martha's Vineyard, where the current runs 3.5 knots at maximum ebb or flood and a nasty chop builds when the wind opposes it.

When is the Nantucket Sound roughest?

The Coast Pilot puts the gale season at October through March, with winter winds and waves named as a weather hazard and the largest waves from November through February. On Nantucket the highest monthly average winds fall from December through April, and gales have occurred in every month except June and July. Thunderstorms are most likely in spring and summer, sometimes as squall lines with gusts occasionally to 60 knots, and hurricanes in late summer and fall may cause high winds.

What helps on this crossing

  • In winter, check the marine forecast for west and northwest wind, which the Coast Pilot gives as the usual direction of gales in the sound.
  • If your dates are flexible, travel in June or July. Nantucket has recorded gales in every other month, but not in those two.
  • Sit midship and low, keep your eyes on the horizon and put your phone away. A screen holds your eyes still while your inner ear feels the chop.

For the full toolkit see the seasickness guide, or what to do once it has already started. If the rocking follows you ashore afterwards, that is land sickness, which is normal, and it passes.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Hyannis to Nantucket ferry rough?

Usually not, and it depends mostly on the wind. The crossing takes 1 hour on the high-speed boats and 2 hours 15 minutes on the traditional ferry. Winter gales, mostly from the west and northwest, are the thing to watch.

Is Nantucket Sound rough in July?

July is one of the calmest months. Gales have occurred on Nantucket in every month except June and July, and the Coast Pilot's gale season for the sound runs from October through March. Summer thunderstorms are the exception: they can arrive as squall lines, with winds that occasionally gust to 60 knots.

Is Nantucket Sound rough in January?
