Is the Santa Barbara Channel rough? What to expect on the crossing
Often, and more so the farther west you go. Island Packers says the boat ride to San Miguel often encounters rough sea conditions, and the National Park Service tells visitors to be ready for rough seas at any time. The Coast Pilot adds that in northwest weather, boats crossing from the mainland usually meet heavier seas as the islands are approached.

Key facts
- The Santa Barbara Channel is a channel, and passenger reports place it in the high roughness band.
- The mechanism behind that reputation: Afternoon northwest wind along the islands' north shores.
- Conditions are reported roughest in January, February, March, April, May and December.
- The calmest months are usually September, October and November.
Why is the Santa Barbara Channel so rough?
The channel is 63 miles long and widens from 11 miles at the east end to 23 miles at the west end, with depths of 40 to more than 300 fathoms (240 to more than 1,800 feet) along the recommended track. The northern Channel Islands break the force of the heavy westerly Pacific swell, but the prevailing winds are west and northwest and blow nearly every day, especially in the afternoon. Those west winds usually begin about 10 a.m. and grow stronger until sundown. In northwest weather, a belt of rough seas known locally as Windy Lane lies along the north shores of the islands and is about 6 miles wide.
When is the Santa Barbara Channel roughest?
The National Park Service says strong winds often occur in spring and afternoon winds are common in summer, with calm winds and seas more frequent near the end of summer and continuing through October. From around October strong east or Santa Ana winds are possible, and the Coast Pilot adds that strong southeast winds in winter can leave the sea too rough for several days for small vessels. Island Packers describes October and November as a late-season second summer with pleasant sea conditions.

The crossing: 1 to 4.5 hours
Roughest stretch: Windy Lane, along the islands' north shores
Midship on a low deck. The roughest water comes in the last miles before the islands, and the wind builds through the day, so a morning boat is the easier ride.

What helps on this crossing
- Take the morning boat. The National Park Service says winds are often calm in the early morning and increase in the afternoon, and the Coast Pilot says the west winds usually begin about 10 a.m.
- Ask which route the boat will take. Island Packers prefers the southern route to Santa Rosa and says it can be smoother.
- Sit midship on a low deck, keep your eyes on the horizon and put your phone away, most of all while crossing the belt along the islands' north shores, where the Coast Pilot places the rough water.
For the full toolkit see the seasickness guide, or what to do once it has already started. For what the trials actually say about the oldest trick on that list, see the verdict on looking at the horizon. If the rocking follows you ashore afterwards, that is land sickness, which is normal, and it passes.

July is mixed rather than calm. The National Park Service says afternoon winds are common in summer and calm winds and seas become more frequent near the end of summer. The Coast Pilot says the west winds usually begin about 10 a.m. and grow stronger until sundown, so a morning boat meets the lighter wind.
Is the Santa Barbara Channel rough in March?

Is the boat to Santa Cruz Island rough?
It depends on the day. The run to Scorpion Anchorage takes about 1 hour, and the National Park Service says the eastern end of Santa Cruz has more moderate winds than Santa Rosa and San Miguel. Island Packers says the longer ride to San Miguel often encounters rough sea conditions.
