Key facts

  • The San Pedro Channel is a channel, and passenger reports place it in the moderate roughness band.
  • The mechanism behind that reputation: Open Pacific channel, spring peak.
  • Conditions are reported roughest in March and April.
  • The calmest months are usually July, August, September and October.
  • It is also known as Catalina Channel.

Why does the San Pedro Channel get rough?

San Pedro Channel is about 17 miles wide between the mainland, from Point Fermin to Point Vicente, and Santa Catalina Island. It is open water on the Pacific side, and the NOAA Coast Pilot says strong winds and rough seas, while less frequent than farther north, can be a problem on this coast from the middle of fall through late spring. In the coastal waters between 31 and 34 degrees north, waves above 9 feet are recorded 0.3 to 1.8 percent of the time, most often in March and April. Currents in the channel are weak: the Coast Pilot gives 0.2 knot for the tidal current and says currents above 1 knot are infrequent.

When is the San Pedro Channel roughest?

March and April are the roughest months in the NOAA Coast Pilot's wave table, with waves above 9 feet about 1.7 to 1.8 percent of the time, against 0.3 percent in August. Winds above 33 knots are recorded 0.0 to 0.1 percent of the time from June to September. Strong winds and rough seas can be a problem from the middle of fall through late spring.

What helps on this crossing

  • Pick the port by the clock. Catalina Express lists about 1 hour from Long Beach, 1 hour 15 minutes from San Pedro and 1 hour 30 minutes from Dana Point, so Long Beach means the least time at sea.
  • Pick your month. Waves above 9 feet are most frequent in March and April and least frequent in August, so late summer is the easier bet.
  • Sit midship by a window and keep your eyes on the horizon. Put your phone away for the hour: the crossing is short enough to wait.

For the full toolkit see the seasickness guide, or what to do once it has already started. If the rocking follows you ashore afterwards, that is land sickness, which is normal, and it passes.

Frequently asked questions

Is the San Pedro Channel rough in April?

April is one of the roughest months on this coast. The NOAA Coast Pilot puts waves above 9 feet at 1.8 percent of the time in the coastal waters between 31 and 34 degrees north, the highest of any month, with March close behind at 1.7 percent. That is still a small share of the time. Catalina Express can cancel for adverse weather, so check your sailing on the day.

Is the San Pedro Channel rough in August?

Usually not. August has the lowest share of waves above 9 feet in the NOAA Coast Pilot table, 0.3 percent, and winds above 33 knots are recorded 0.0 percent of the time in July and August.

Which Catalina Express crossing is the shortest?

Long Beach to Avalon, at approximately 1 hour. San Pedro to Avalon takes approximately 1 hour 15 minutes and Dana Point to Avalon approximately 1 hour 30 minutes.

Does the Santa Ana wind affect the Catalina crossing?

It can in fall and winter. The Santa Ana is a strong offshore wind from the north-east or east. The NOAA Coast Pilot says northeast Santa Ana winds occasionally blow at Santa Catalina Island during the fall and winter, and that beyond 50 miles from shore they are of little concern.

Is the San Pedro Channel rough in winter?

Not usually. In a typical year, December, January and February are all rated mixed. Its roughest months are usually March and April. This is the typical pattern, not a forecast for any sailing.
