Is the Cozumel Channel rough? What to expect on the crossing
Usually fine, sometimes not. The ferries cross in about 35 to 45 minutes, but the water is open and carries a strong current. In strong winds or storms the port authority can close the port, and the ferries stop until it reopens.

Key facts
- The Cozumel Channel is a channel, and passenger reports place it in the moderate roughness band.
- The mechanism behind that reputation: Strong current, norte winds.
- It is also known as Canal de Cozumel / Estrecho de Cozumel.
Why does the Cozumel Channel get rough?
Cozumel lies 19 km from the mainland, across a channel about 18 km wide and 400 m deep. The Yucatan Current runs through it, and a 2019 resource assessment reports flow of up to 2.0 m/s in the mid-section. On the mainland shore opposite, a 30-year hindcast published in 2017 puts mean significant wave height at about 1.05 m at Tulum and 1.07 m at Cancun, with storm-wave events starting near 1.9 m. Rough days come with Nortes, which show up in the wave record from November to March at Cancun and from February to April at Tulum, and with tropical cyclones.
When is the Cozumel Channel roughest?
Nortes usually occur from October to April, with the most intense events from December to March. The hurricane season runs from 1 June to 30 November, and September is the month with the most tropical cyclones affecting the Mexican coasts. Mean wave heights at the mainland nodes opposite Cozumel show no clear summer and winter pattern.

The crossings that cross it

What helps on this crossing
- Check the forecast and the port status in norte season. Nortes usually occur from October to April, most intensely from December to March, and the port authority can close the port to small boats first and then to larger vessels.
- If you have a flight to catch, cross back the day before. Cancun Trip Insider gives this advice because port closures that stop the ferries come most often in norte season and in the June to November hurricane season.
- Sit low and toward the middle of the boat, keep your eyes on the horizon, and put your phone away for the crossing.
For the full toolkit see the seasickness guide, or what to do once it has already started. For what the trials actually say about the oldest trick on that list, see the verdict on looking at the horizon. If the rocking follows you ashore afterwards, that is land sickness, which is normal, and it passes.
Frequently asked questions
Is the Cozumel Channel rough in January?
At times. January sits inside norte season, which usually runs from October to April with the most intense events from December to March. Cancun Trip Insider says crossings are then rougher and occasionally suspended. In January 2022 the Cozumel port captaincy closed the port during a cold front, and snorkel and dive trips for more than two thousand people were cancelled.
Is the Cozumel Channel rough in September?
At times. September is the month with the most tropical cyclones affecting the Mexican coasts, inside a hurricane season that runs from 1 June to 30 November. The port authority can close the port in storms, and the ferries stop until it reopens. Mean wave heights on the mainland coast show no clear summer and winter pattern, so summer is not automatically calm.
How strong is the current in the Cozumel Channel?
Strong. The channel is about 18 km wide and 400 m deep, and a 2019 resource assessment reports flow velocities of up to 2.0 m/s within its mid-section. The flow is part of the Yucatan Current.
How long is the ferry from Playa del Carmen to Cozumel?
Ferry guides put it at 35 to 45 minutes. Cancun Trip Insider quotes about 35 to 40 minutes for Ultramar and about 45 for Xcaret Xailing, and Ferryhopper says the trip normally ranges from 35 to 45 minutes.
