Key facts
- The Gulf of Thailand is a gulf, and passenger reports place it in the moderate roughness band.
- The mechanism behind that reputation: Shallow gulf, monsoon wind chop.
- Conditions are reported roughest in December.
- The calmest months are usually March, April and October.
- It is also known as Gulf of Siam (historical name) / Ao Thai.
Why does the Gulf of Thailand get rough?
The Gulf of Thailand is a shallow inlet with an average depth of 58 m and a deepest point of 85 m. It is about 800 km long and up to 560 km wide, so a steady wind has a long stretch of open water to work on. The wind blows from the north-east in the north-east monsoon, which is active from mid-October to mid-February, and from the south-west in the south-west monsoon, which runs from mid-May to mid-October. In a strong north-east spell the forecast was 2 to 3 metres in the lower gulf and about 2 metres in the upper gulf.
When is the Gulf of Thailand roughest?
The north-east monsoon is active from mid-October to mid-February, and 25 years of wave reanalysis data (ERA5) rank December as the roughest month on the Chumphon to Koh Tao route, then November and January, with April the calmest. The south-west monsoon can still bring rough days: the forecast for 15 August 2025 gave 2 to 3 metres in the upper gulf.

What helps on this crossing
- Choose the month before the route. Wave data puts December, November and January as the roughest on the Chumphon to Koh Tao crossing, and March, April and October as the calmest.
- If the monsoon is active, pick a shorter hop. The Donsak to Koh Samui car ferry takes about 1 hour 30 minutes and Koh Samui to Koh Phangan about 30 minutes, against 1 hour 45 minutes for the open Chumphon to Koh Tao leg.
- Sit low near the middle, face forward and watch the horizon. Keep your phone in your bag on the open legs.
For the full toolkit see the seasickness guide, or what to do once it has already started. For what the trials actually say about the oldest trick on that list, see the verdict on looking at the horizon. If the rocking follows you ashore afterwards, that is land sickness, which is normal, and it passes.
