Is the Celtic Sea rough? What to expect on the crossing

Often, and more so from October to March. The Celtic Sea has no land features to divide it from the open Atlantic to the south and west, so Atlantic weather reaches the ferry routes from Ireland to Brittany and out to the Isles of Scilly. June to August is the easier window.

Key facts

  • The Celtic Sea is a sea, and passenger reports place it in the high roughness band.
  • The mechanism behind that reputation: Open Atlantic swell over a shelf sea.
  • Conditions are reported roughest in February and December.
  • The calmest months are usually April, May, June, July, August and September.
  • It is also known as An Mhuir Cheilteach (Irish) / Y Mรดr Celtaidd (Welsh) / Mer Celtique (French).

Why is the Celtic Sea so rough?

The Celtic Sea covers about 300,000 kmยฒ of shelf sea, and the continental shelf drops away sharply along its southern and western edges. There are no land features to divide it from the open Atlantic to the south and west. The north-east part is 90 to 100 m deep. The Charting Progress 2 report on UK waves finds a high risk of high and extreme waves from October to March, with the seasonal maximum falling in mid-January in the south.

When is the Celtic Sea roughest?

The Charting Progress 2 report on UK waves says mean wave heights peak around January, and the seasonal maximum comes in mid-January in the south. Wave reanalysis data (ERA5) ranks December and February highest in the central Celtic Sea and June and July lowest. Scillonian III runs only from March to November.

  • Pick June to August if you can. Wave reanalysis data puts June and July as the calmest months and December and February as the roughest.
  • For the Isles of Scilly, check the operator's service status page for travel advisories before you leave. On board, sit low near the middle of Scillonian III, face forward and watch the horizon.

For the full toolkit see the seasickness guide, or what to do once it has already started. If the rocking follows you ashore afterwards, that is land sickness, which is normal, and it passes.
