Winter southerlies over deep open water

In the Nausea Index table of the 121 sea crossings we cover, the Ionian Sea is rated manageable, one of 81 in that band, with 40 rated higher. Full table: the roughest sea crossings, ranked.

Key facts

  • The Ionian Sea is a sea, and passenger reports place it in the moderate roughness band.
  • The mechanism behind that reputation: Winter southerlies over deep open water.
  • Conditions are reported roughest in January.
  • The calmest months are usually May, June, July, August and September.
  • It is also known as Iรณnio Pรฉlagos (Greek) / Mar Ionio (Italian).

Why does the Ionian Sea get rough?

The Ionian Sea is deep: the Calypso Deep, the deepest point in the Mediterranean, lies in it at 5,109 m. Ferry routes between Patras and Igoumenitsa in Greece and Brindisi and Ancona in Italy cross its east and north. Libeccio and sirocco are southerly winds in the southern Ionian: the libeccio blows mainly in winter from the south-west and the sirocco mainly in autumn and spring from the south-east. The same study finds extreme waves most variable in the Ionian sub-basin in winter.

When is the Ionian Sea roughest?

The Frontiers study defines a stormy period from November to March and a relatively calm period from June to August. Wave reanalysis data (ERA5) ranks January roughest off western Greece, with December and February next, and August calmest. The sirocco blows mainly in autumn and spring from the south-east.

What helps on this crossing

  • Choose June to August for the long Italy to Greece crossing. The Frontiers study of Mediterranean wind waves calls that the calm period, and wave data rates January as the roughest month off western Greece.
  • The Corfu and Paxos hops are short. Igoumenitsa to Corfu takes about 1 hour 30 minutes and Corfu to Paxos by hydrofoil 55 minutes, against 7.5 to 9.5 hours from Brindisi.
  • Sit low near the middle, face forward and watch the horizon. On an overnight sailing, use a cabin for the open-sea hours.

For the full toolkit see the seasickness guide, or what to do once it has already started. If the rocking follows you ashore afterwards, that is land sickness, which is normal, and it passes.
