Key facts

  • The Bocaina Strait is a strait, and passenger reports place it in the moderate roughness band.
  • The mechanism behind that reputation: Trade-wind chop in a short, shallow strait.
  • It is also known as La Bocayna / Estrecho de la Bocaina.

Why does the Bocaina Strait get rough?

The Bocaina Strait separates Lanzarote from Fuerteventura and is at least 11 km wide, with Lobos Island on its southern side. The water is shallow in places: Spanish Wikipedia gives the water depth between the islands as 30 to 35 m and lists the maximum depth as 160 m. The Canary Islands climate is moderated by the sea and in summer by the trade winds, and Fuerteventura's coasts see the summer trade winds and the winter swells of the Atlantic.

When is the Bocaina Strait roughest?

Lanzarote's windiest months are July and August, followed by April and June, and the wind usually eases a little in September. The summer trade winds and the winter Atlantic swells are the two seasonal forces named for Fuerteventura's coasts.
