Is the Vineyard Sound rough? What to expect on the crossing
Mostly not. The Woods Hole to Vineyard Haven crossing takes about 45 minutes, and Martha's Vineyard is just seven miles off Cape Cod. NOAA's Coast Pilot names one well known rough spot, West Chop at the Vineyard Haven entrance, and says southerly or westerly gales raise a heavy sea at the sound's western entrance.

Wind against tidal current at West Chop
In the Nausea Index table of the 121 sea crossings we cover, the Vineyard Sound is rated manageable, one of 81 in that band, with 40 rated higher. Full table: the roughest sea crossings, ranked.
Key facts
- The Vineyard Sound is a sound, and passenger reports place it in the moderate roughness band.
- The mechanism behind that reputation: Wind against tidal current at West Chop.
- The calmest months are usually May, June, July, August and September.
Why does the Vineyard Sound get rough?
Vineyard Sound lies between the Elizabeth Islands and Martha's Vineyard, and it joins Rhode Island Sound on the west and Nantucket Sound on the east, on a line between Nobska Point and West Chop. With southerly or westerly gales there is a heavy sea in its western entrance, and heavy seas occur at times off the entrance to Quicks Hole. The tidal current strengthens from 1.2 knots at Hedge Fence to about 2.4 knots off Nobska Point, then eases to 1.6 knots off Gay Head Light. At West Chop, on the west side of the Vineyard Haven entrance, the current runs 3.5 knots at maximum ebb or flood, and when the wind opposes it a nasty chop is set up.
When is the Vineyard Sound roughest?
The Coast Pilot's weather note for Nantucket Sound and vicinity, which names West Chop, puts gales at about 3 to 6 percent of the time from October through March, frequently out of the west and northwest. On nearby Nantucket the highest monthly average winds fall from December through April, and gales have occurred in every month except June and July. Thunderstorms are most likely in spring and summer, sometimes as squall lines with gusts occasionally to 60 knots.

The crossings that cross it
| Route | Typical duration | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Woods Hole to Vineyard Haven (Steamship Authority) | about 45 minutes | Vineyard Haven is the island harbor entered between East Chop and West Chop. |
| Woods Hole to Oak Bluffs (Steamship Authority) | about 45 minutes | Seasonal, May to October. |
| Falmouth to Oak Bluffs (Island Queen) | about 35 minutes | A summer ferry from the wharf at the head of Falmouth Harbor. |
What helps on this crossing
- Look at the tide as well as the wind. The Coast Pilot says the 3.5-knot current at West Chop builds a nasty chop when the wind opposes it, and NOAA publishes current predictions for Vineyard and Nantucket Sounds.
- Sit midship and low, keep your eyes on the horizon and put your phone away. The crossing is short, about 45 minutes.
- If you can choose, travel between May and September, the calmer months in the table. Gales are most likely from October through March.
For the full toolkit see the seasickness guide, or what to do once it has already started. For what the trials actually say about the oldest trick on that list, see the verdict on looking at the horizon. If the rocking follows you ashore afterwards, that is land sickness, which is normal, and it passes.
Frequently asked questions
Is the Woods Hole to Martha's Vineyard ferry rough?
Usually not. The crossing takes about 45 minutes. The spot the Coast Pilot calls a well known rough spot is West Chop, on the west side of the Vineyard Haven entrance, where the current runs 3.5 knots at maximum ebb or flood and wind against it builds a nasty chop.
Is Vineyard Sound rough in July?
July is one of the calmer months. On nearby Nantucket, gales have occurred in every month except June and July. Thunderstorms are the exception: they are most likely in spring and summer, and they can arrive as squall lines with winds that occasionally gust to 60 knots.
Is Vineyard Sound rough in January?
January is in the mixed half of the year. The Coast Pilot's weather note for Nantucket Sound and vicinity, which includes West Chop, gives gales about 3 to 6 percent of the time from October through March, frequently out of the west and northwest. For Vineyard Sound itself, it reports a heavy sea in the western entrance in southerly or westerly gales.
Where is the roughest water in Vineyard Sound?
The Coast Pilot points to two places. At West Chop, wind against a 3.5-knot current builds a nasty chop. At the western entrance, between Cuttyhunk Island and Gay Head, southerly or westerly gales raise a heavy sea. The Woods Hole to Vineyard Haven route runs at the eastern end of the sound, near Nobska Point and West Chop.
