Is the Lake Michigan rough? What to expect on the crossing
Yes, at the wrong time of year. The cross-lake ferries sail from May to October, and NOAA's Coast Pilot says sea conditions are worst in October and November, with extreme waves of 20 to 22 feet on record. In June and July the lake is far calmer: seas of 5 to 10 feet drop to less than 20 percent of the time.

Key facts
- The Lake Michigan is a lake, and passenger reports place it in the high roughness band.
- The mechanism behind that reputation: Long fetch under autumn gales.
- Conditions are reported roughest in October and November.
- The calmest months are usually June and July.
Why is the Lake Michigan so rough?
Rough water is created when strong winds blow over a long fetch of water, and Lake Michigan is 307 miles long and 118 miles wide, with a maximum recorded depth of 923 feet. The south end is fully exposed to storms from the north, with a fetch of about 300 miles. Northerly winds raise dangerous seas on the south part of the lake and southerly winds do the same on the north part, which also generates hazardous currents at harbor entrances. Strong winds often blow out of the west and northwest, which makes east shore harbor entrances dangerous.
When is the Lake Michigan roughest?
The Coast Pilot says sea conditions are worst in October and November, when lakewide wave heights of 5 to 10 feet occur about 35 percent of the time, and that gales are most likely from September through April, particularly in the fall. In spring, seas of 5 to 10 feet develop 15 to 30 percent of the time in the south and 20 to 40 percent in the north, and in summer they drop to less than 20 percent in June and July before the fall buildup begins by August. Seas of 10 feet or more occur 3 to 5 percent of the time from November through March, and thunderstorms, most likely from May through October, can spring up quickly with strong winds and rough seas.

- Check the marine forecast before you go, most of all from September on. The Coast Pilot says gales are most likely from September through April, particularly in the fall.
- If your dates are flexible, pick June or July. The Coast Pilot says seas of 5 to 10 feet drop to less than 20 percent of the time then.
- Sit midship on a low deck, keep your eyes on the horizon and put your phone away. The cross-lake runs take 2.5 to 4 hours.
For the full toolkit see the seasickness guide, or what to do once it has already started. For what the trials actually say about the oldest trick on that list, see the verdict on looking at the horizon. If the rocking follows you ashore afterwards, that is land sickness, which is normal, and it passes.
