Is the Vieques Sound rough? What to expect on the crossing
Sometimes, most often in winter and during a passing storm. The Ceiba ferry takes 1 hour to Vieques and 1 hour 30 minutes to Culebra, and NOAA's Coast Pilot says seas in the area usually run less than 8 feet. It also says high seas come with strong winds from the northeast through southeast blowing over a long fetch, and that the tropical cyclone season runs from June through November.

Steady trade winds over a long fetch, shoals in the west
In the Nausea Index table of the 121 sea crossings we cover, the Vieques Sound is rated manageable, one of 81 in that band, with 40 rated higher. Full table: the roughest sea crossings, ranked.
Key facts
- The Vieques Sound is a sound, and passenger reports place it in the moderate roughness band.
- The mechanism behind that reputation: Steady trade winds over a long fetch, shoals in the west.
- Conditions are reported roughest in January, February, March and December.
- The calmest months are usually May, June and July.
- It is also known as Sonda de Vieques.
Why does the Vieques Sound get rough?
The sound extends from the east coast of Puerto Rico to Virgin Passage, between Culebra on the north and Vieques on the south, and it is about 20 to 22 miles long and 8 to 15 miles wide. The east part is clear with depths of 7 to 17 fathoms (42 to 102 feet), while the west part has numerous shoals and reefs and strong tidal currents over the shoals. The east trade winds are steady: northeast through southeast winds blow about 80 percent of the time year round, and winds of 17 to 33 knots blow about 30 percent of the time. High seas are usually associated with strong winds from the northeast through southeast blowing over a long fetch of water.
When is the Vieques Sound roughest?
The east trade winds blow all year, and in summer they strengthen during the day, with morning averages of 12 to 13 knots rising to 13 to 15 knots in the afternoon. From November through April northeasterlies are the secondary direction, and winter gales are more likely in the northeast quadrant. The tropical cyclone season runs from June through November and is most active from August through the first half of October, so the table rates those months moderate for storm risk, not because most days are rough.

The crossings that cross it
| Route | Typical duration | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Ceiba to Vieques (Puerto Rico Ferry) | 1 hour | The operator's ferry from Ceiba, on the main island. |
| Ceiba to Culebra (Puerto Rico Ferry) | 1 hour 30 minutes | The longer of the two Ceiba crossings. |
What helps on this crossing
- Know which crossing you booked. The Ceiba to Vieques ferry takes 1 hour and the Ceiba to Culebra ferry 1 hour 30 minutes, so Culebra is the longer time on the water.
- If your dates are flexible, travel from May to July, the calmest months in the table. Hurricane season runs from June through November, so check the National Hurricane Center outlook at nhc.noaa.gov before you go.
- Sit midship on a low deck, keep your eyes on the horizon and put your phone away.
For the full toolkit see the seasickness guide, or what to do once it has already started. If the rocking follows you ashore afterwards, that is land sickness, which is normal, and it passes.
Frequently asked questions
Is Vieques Sound rough in July?
July is one of the calmer months in the table, though the trades are strong: the Coast Pilot says average windspeeds are highest in summer, with afternoon averages of 13 to 15 knots. The tropical cyclone season has started, and the most active period is August through the first half of October.
Is Vieques Sound rough in January?
January is in the rougher half of the year. From November through April northeasterlies are the secondary wind direction, and the Coast Pilot says cold fronts occasionally interrupt the trade winds. It says winter gales are more likely in the northeast quadrant, but that gale-force winds are unlikely.
Is the ferry from Ceiba to Vieques or Culebra rough?
It depends on the wind and the season. The Vieques crossing takes 1 hour and the Culebra crossing 1 hour 30 minutes. The Coast Pilot says seas in the area usually run less than 8 feet, with high seas associated with strong northeast through southeast winds blowing over a long fetch.
When is Vieques Sound calmest?
May to July in the table. The tropical cyclone season is most active from August through the first half of October, so the table rates August to October moderate for storm risk, not because most days are rough.
