Is the Coral Sea rough? What to expect on the crossing

Sometimes, and it depends on the wind and on how far offshore you go. Great Barrier Reef day boats from Cairns and Airlie Beach run on large catamarans, and the inner reef stretches are more sheltered than the run to the outer reef. Cruise Whitsundays says 10 to 15 knots of wind is generally a smooth ride and 20 knots or more is a more active, bumpier journey.

Trade-wind chop behind a reef screen

In the Nausea Index table of the 121 sea crossings we cover, the Coral Sea is rated manageable, one of 81 in that band, with 40 rated higher. Full table: the roughest sea crossings, ranked.

Key facts

  • The Coral Sea is a sea, and passenger reports place it in the moderate roughness band.
  • The mechanism behind that reputation: Trade-wind chop behind a reef screen.
  • Conditions are reported roughest in April, May, June and July.
  • The calmest months are usually November and December.

Why does the Coral Sea get rough?

The Coral Sea is deep, with an average depth of 2,394 m, and southeasterly trade winds dominate every sea area in every season. The trades are strong north of 15ยฐS between March and November, and west of 155ยฐE gales are common between January and August. The Great Barrier Reef lies off the Queensland coast, in places across a channel 160 km wide, and it screens the coast from ocean waves. Cruise Whitsundays describes its trip to Hardy Reef, 39 nautical miles from shore, as open ocean travel.

When is the Coral Sea roughest?

Wave reanalysis data (ERA5) puts April to July as the roughest months at the outer reef off Cairns and in the Whitsundays, and November and December as the calmest. Between 15ยฐS and 20ยฐS, west of 150ยฐE, gales are rare except from June to August, when strong southeasterly winds occur a few days a month. Tropical cyclones are most frequent from January to April, so check the forecast before a summer trip.

What helps on this crossing

  • Choose the inner reef if you are unsure. Great Adventures calls the 45 minute run to Green Island more protected than the cruise to the outer reef.
  • Check the wind forecast the day before. Cruise Whitsundays gives a simple guide: 10 to 15 knots is generally a smooth ride, 15 to 20 knots brings some light movement, and 20 knots or more is a bumpier journey.
  • Sit low near the middle of the boat, face forward and watch the horizon. Keep your phone away on the outbound leg.

For the full toolkit see the seasickness guide, or what to do once it has already started. For what the trials actually say about the oldest trick on that list, see the verdict on looking at the horizon. If the rocking follows you ashore afterwards, that is land sickness, which is normal, and it passes.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Coral Sea rough in June?

June is in the windier half of the year. Wave data rates it as a rough month at the outer reef off Cairns, and strong southeasterly winds occur a few days a month from June to August. Cruise Whitsundays says 20 knots or more gives a bumpier journey, so check the wind on the day.

Is the Coral Sea rough in December?

December is one of the calmest months in the wave data at the outer reef. It is also in cyclone season: tropical cyclones are most frequent from January to April, and the range runs from November to May south of 10ยฐS. A settled forecast matters more than the calendar.

How long does the boat to the Great Barrier Reef take?

From Cairns, Great Adventures lists about 45 minutes to Green Island and about 2 hours to the outer reef. From Airlie Beach, Cruise Whitsundays lists about 3 hours to Hardy Reef, and about 2 hours from Hamilton Island.

Will I get seasick on a Great Barrier Reef boat?

Some people do. Cruise Whitsundays says the trip to the reef involves open ocean travel, so some guests may feel motion sickness, while Great Adventures says its large, stable catamarans keep a very good ride even in rougher conditions. The 45 minute Green Island run is the shorter option.
